I hiked the Appalachian Trail again last week. Miller does a particularly good job of describing how hikers' moods change more sharply than the physical ups and downs of the mountain chain -- from senseless euphoria to mindless morosity -- as they put one foot in front of the other for months at a time. Reads like a daily travel log

I kept waiting for some insight or even a glimpse into what the trip meant to Miller but it really reads like a trip log where he chronicled his daily hike with little to no description of his surroundings or emotions. It was interesting for a while - right up until I realized that every chapter was virtually the same as the last with a (slightly) different list of characters and states. The endless roll of hiker's trail names and the description of the rocks and mud on the trail all ran together by the end. I wasn't looking for another "Wild" but something besides a recounting of the daily mileage, blisters and other hikers would have been nice. It did get me motivated to try a long distance hike (not a thru hike) though.

I got this and another AT book, because I wanted to understand the experience of a through hiker as closely as possible, to understand if it's something I want to undertake. I've recently gotten the bug, so to speak, and I just want to know - is this something I could possibly do? I live a pretty sheltered life, and I don't want to minimize this challenge - I want to understand it in depth so that if I do ever undertake it, I will have a good idea of what to expect and hopefully, not flame out.

Of course there are a lot of choices of first-person AT through-hike testimonials. I chose this one because I could identify with the author in a couple of ways - my work life is one of corporate / office-centric work that feels restrictive and locked-in, and I am at an age where one might begin to question, do I still have the vigor to take on such a challenge (a bit older than the author was when he started)? Or might I five years from now?

I did really enjoy the book. The author has a dry humor that just rarely shows through, and at least once I wondered, is he messing with the reader? I do wish he would have deployed it a bit more often. More than that, I was hoping for a bit more discussion on the practical side - cooking meals, filtering water, climbing steep sections, setting up tents in wind and rain, battling bugs, sleeping near noisy, smelly strangers, not showering for days at a time, and yes, going #2 in the woods. There are some mentions on these and other practical matters, but mostly they are not discussed in detail. Some might appreciate that, but I was looking for the nitty gritty of "This is what it's like living in the woods for months on end". One aspect that did get a good detailed treatment was foot maladies, foot leg/health, and footwear (all very important). Another was the more general topic of 'food acquisition' shall I say (as opposed to cooking).

The book was laid out very well. The organization and chapter-heading maps did a good job of helping me understand the flow of the walk and the length of sections. The chapters did a good job of helping me understand some of the personality and relative difficulty of different sections of the trail, and a few of the many interesting towns, hostels, inns, trail waypoints, landmarks, and people. I appreciated the author's personality and how he discussed his motives, and aligned his dedication to his family to the ultimately somewhat self-centric decision to go on a hike alone for months. No offense intended to any through-hikers. I think it's also a grand way to show your family what is possible, and hopefully inspire them not to limit themselves. Along with friends, co-workers, and strangers on Amazon.

Fabulous, gritty, nuts & bolts of trail hiking

If you want to read a book about actually hiking the AT, and not a fluffy, sappy account of someone's emotional life and trying to escape their problems and then every once in a while they're hiking on this trail, then this is THE book! But be clear that this is what you will be getting; a day to day, blow by blow account of hiking the AT including the minutia, drudgery and often repetitiveness that is a part of this 2000+ mile journey. It just is. That being said, some parts of this book just aren't that gripping. But, they are honest and true to author David Miller's experience. I loved it. I loved the little details of everyday trail life. I found it absolutely fascinating and this was what I thought was lacking in another well known bestseller that was recently made into a film and was so disappointing and "wild" to me. Are there life lessons learned from hiking solo for so many miles? Of course, duh. But, the physicality and actual hiking of the trail is what I was interested in and what the author gives his full attention in this amazing recounting. If that's what sounds interesting to you, then you will not be disappointed!

The Film World's Open Road

In a world where research all too often consists of a few minutes on the internet, Iain Borden's "Drive" shows how it's done, or how it should be done.

With Borden having watched an astonishing 450 movies ranging from silents to recent releases - which works out to almost two films per page - like its subject "Drive" manages to be many things at once. Overall it is a cultural examination of the automobile in film, exploring what these flickering images say about us at any given time. It also examines how the "movie and automobile industries grew together." As legendary director C. B. DeMille pointed out, and as quoted by Borden, they both reflect "the love of motion and speed, the restless urge toward improvement and expansion, the kinetic energy of a young, vigorous nation."

They're all here: road movies such as "Thelma and Louise" and "Vanishing Point;" great car chases including "Bullit," "The French Connection" and "The Italian Job;" and auto-psychological movies such as "Driving Mis Daisy," "Rebel Without a Cause," and "American Graffiti." By the way, despite what I cited above, Borden does not deal only in American films. He explores British ("Charlie Bubbles" is a favorite), European, and Asian films, too, from the well-known to the delightfully obscure.

My only complaint is that he might have tried to hard to shoehorn certain cinematic automobile experiences into specific categories. "Drive" consists of four main chapters; cities, journeys, what he calls "Motopia," and altered states. The divisions have to do with speed, terrain and form of driving. But, to adapt what Freud said about the cigar, sometimes a car chase is just a car chase. The scenes may not mean any more than the movie could afford them and the film makers thought the audience would enjoy them. I suspect that these divisions have as much do do with organizing a book as anything else, a way to bring order to a disorderly subject.

Overall, Borden's creation is thoughtful, gracefully expressed, and lavishly illustrated. So buckle your seat belt, I think you'll enjoy this "Drive."

"Are you sure about this?" my friend Tori asks, shooting me a doubtful glance as we pull into the drop-off lane at the Austin airport.  She frowns. "I still don't think it's a good idea."
 
"You're one to talk," I tease as I open the door. "I swear I saw rope marks on your wrists this morning."
 
She has the good grace to blush at that.
 
I open the passenger door as Tori slams the car into park and gets out to follow me around to the back. Damn, but that woman can be persistent. It's one of the many reasons she's one of the top FBI agents in the field office where we both work, and why I love being assigned to work cases with her. That and the fact that she's one of my closestfriends, along with Kate, the other female agent in our office who's the thirdmember of our bad-ass girl gang.
 
"If you want to see if you like being tied up, fine," she continues as I lift my carry-on bag out of the trunk."I'm not judging, I promise. I just don't think your first experience with BDSM should be at a weekend retreat out in the middle of nowhere where you don't know anyone.  Find a guy you like,get to know him, and then explore your fantasies with him."
 
"You're the one who told me about the retreat," I remind her.
 
She rolls her eyes. "I thought you were asking for a case."
 
I love Tori, but she has no idea what it's like to be me.  She's married to one of the sexiest and most self-confident men I've ever met, who in addition to being rumored to have singularly erotic tastes, also happens to be charming, wickedly funny, an incredibly talented singer, and completely and unequivocally in love with his wife. 
 
I set my bag down and look her in the eye."That would be ideal," I agree, "but men like Drake are rare. You're lucky that you found someone who's not intimidated by your job.  Men are only into me until they find out who I am or what I do. After that they either run for the hills or become groveling idiots.  After eight to ten hours a day of being a bad ass, I just want someone else to take charge.  Is that so wrong?"
 
Tori sighs."Of course not.  I just don't know if this is the best way to go about finding what you want."
 
"I can't think of a better way," I say resolutely.  "This is actually perfect.  I can explore what it's like, and what I like, without any strings attached, and I won't run into anyone I know since it's in Denver.   And you said yourself that your brother-in-law's friend who organized the retreat is both classy and experienced with this...kind of thing."
 
Tori nods slowly."That's true.  He's owned an exclusive club in Houston for years and I know he'll make sure things stay safe and consensual."
 
"Don't worry. I'll be fine," I assure her."I catch bad guys for a living, same as you. You should know better than anyone that I can protect myself."
 
"I'm more worried about your heart," she mutters darkly as I give her one last hug before walking into the airport.
 
My heart is the last thing I'm worried about.  I've given up on finding anyone worthy of it, and I certainly have no intention of giving it to anyone.  My body, on the other hand, is another story.  It craves a man who can own it, who can take my senses, my power, and my choice and give me freedom in return.   I want a man strong enough to possess me, a man I can surrender to, who can take what he wants and in the process, pry the world from my tight grip and set me free to just feel and experience.
 
If I didn't know a man like that existed, maybe I'd be content to settle for less.  But I found it once, and that one man who made love to me a lifetime ago has ruined me for everyone since. I don't even know why I'm thinking about MarcusDunn now.  It's been ten years since hepinned my hands over my head and drove into me with a force that sent mespiraling into pleasure I'd never experienced before or since.  I shake my head, trying to rid myself of the unwanted memory of him--the sculpted hard planes of his tanned face, his powerful body that he worked so hard to keep in prime condition, the way his smile reached his expressive brown eyes, and his naturally commanding presence that demanded respect and deference from everyone he came in contact with.
 
I shake my head, mentally shoving the memoriesback into the box distinctly marked DoNot Open.  I distract myself by talking to the sweet five-year-old seated next to me, and when my plane lands in Denver, I've successfully banished all thoughts of the man I shared the best summer of my life with.  I'm ready to have some fun, and if things work out the way I hope, some mind-blowing sex!

I did enjoy all the Black Brothers stories but this novella, although very good, was somehow a little off for me. There were some parts that seemed a little rushed.. But the characters, their story and their hotness was awesome.

Add to the fun!

My two boys (ages 5 and 6)are Bionicle crazy. I think we've bought enough Bionicles to keep the Lego business afloat on our own! They love sitting down with me on the couch and listening to me read another chapter in this tale of the Toa's beginning. I think it's a good way to use something they like and join in with them by reading to them about it. It's an expression of love from me to them. Since there are no pictures in the book I encourage them to use their minds to imagine what the pictures would be as I read to them. My 6 year old especially does this and afterwards can describe the setting of his imaginary pictures. One of my favorite things to do is read to my kids, so this book was a no-brainer for us. It has brought us lots of enjoyment!

Looking For A Good Book...

For Bionicle fans, Scholastic recently put out a series called the Bionicle Chronicles.
There are 4 books in this new series. Each book averages 125 pages. The first in this series is called Tale of the Toa. This book is set in the ancient land of Mata Nui. Makuta, a powerful evil has risen, causing a darkness to cover the land. Six heroes called the Toa, wash ashore the beach of Mata Nui to help save the Matoran people. Their purpose is to restore peace and destroy all of the evil on Mata Nui.
I couldn't put this book down, it was so exciting. Throughout this whole story, I felt like I was part of the action. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good action/adventure story. If I could say two words about this book it would be READ IT!

I gave this book a five for amazing. I gave it this rating because I think it gives out a lot of information about the six toa, Mata Nui, Makuta, and other important things. This book is about how the six toa, Tahu, Lewa, Kopaka, Onua, Pohatu, and Gali, find all of their Kanohi masks. They have to fight giant beasts and risk their lives to get all of the great masks and to awaken Mata Nui out of a deep slumber.If you want to read about six mighty heroes on an action-packed adventure to save their home island, you should read all the books in this series. Will they succeed or will they fail? Read to find out.

Totally awesome new Henry Bins installment, a Must Read!

Wow, this was totally amazing! The Henry Bins series just keeps getting better and better. Lots of excitement in this installment. Henry learns a lot more about his mother and her activities with the CIA over the years. He learns about his father too, will leave you to read all about that yourself. There are some great scenes with Lassie and Murdock, LOL scenes. I love those two, they are a wonderful counter balance to Henry's sometimes awful past history and current nightmare session. I love almost all of the characters in this series, (not Henry's mother), I love that Lassie talks to Henry. I've always had cats and have wished many times that I knew what they were thinking.

In the Author's Note Nick states the following: "I have the remaining two books outlined and I'm being completely serious when I say they are going to BLOW YOUR FREAKING MIND." I'm sure they will Nick, but what do you mean REMAINING TWO BOOKS? Does Henry really have to end, and Ingrid, Murdock, Lassie, Henry's dad?? No, no, please, they're like family now, I love them all, you made me love them. I hope I'm not the only one who doesn't want this series to end. I encourage anyone who reads this review who loves Henry and his family to tell Nick not to stop writing about them. I understand Nick, that you want to move on to new things, new stories, new characters, but would you at least consider writing about Henry in between your other endeavors? You have an amazing imagination, all your books are fun to read, but Henry and family are really special.

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME

I have been waiting for the next Henry Bins book since I read the last in the series. These books are so unique and a different kind of mystery. I read the first book in the series, 3 am, and really wasn't sure that I would like it because it seems kind of depressing for a guy to only get 1 hour out of 24 awake but it was so funny and crazy that I loved it. After I read the 3rd in the series, 3:21 am, I was so shocked and entertained and waiting for this book. This book has many twist that I totally did not catch until the end. Absolutely some of the funniest dialogue I've ever read in any book is between cat, Lassie, and Henry. I'm convinced that cat talks with his meow or Henry actually speaks cat. I love when Henry googles things Lassie tells him. Awesome book but start at the first in the series, 3 am, it's so much easier to get wrapped up in the story.

About the Author
Djuna Barnes was born in 1892 in Cornwall-on-Hudson in New York State. In 1912 she enrolled as a student at Pratt Institute and then at the Art Students' League, and while she was there she started to work as a reporter and illustrator for the Brooklyn Eagle. In 1921 she moved to Paris, where she lived for almost twenty years and wrote for such publications as Vanity Fair and the New Yorker. Nightwood, written in 1936, was her second novel. It is now considered a masterpiece, praised by T. S. Eliot for its 'great achievement of a style, the beauty of phrasing, the brilliance of wit and characterization, and a quality of horror and doom very nearly related to that of Elizabethan tragedy'. Her other works include A Book, a collection of short stories, poems and one-act plays; a satirical novel, Ladies Almanack; and a verse play, The Antiphon. She died in New York in 1982.

Retracing shadows of the past

This book is a truly educational and absorbing experience for anyone interested in the history of Russia, the revolution of 1917 and the civil war. Not only does it refrain from a one-sided view so tempting for any historian to take, but it also looks as deeply into the events as possible - hardly a single aspect is left out, and each is portrayed in such detail that no criticism whatsoever could be given it on this part. Another great accomplishment of the author of this book is the highly down-to-earth view he takes upon the reasons for which these events actually ever took place, and their consequtive effects. A broader view upon the fall of the Romanov dynasty may be wished for, however, for the author takes up the soiled idea of the Tsar`s "own fault" in the matter, whereas many people have come to see that the Tsar was often under the direct influence of others, and that his mistakes might be blamed only upon his soft nature and not his "laziness" that caused him to WANT to drop the role of Tsar. However, overall this book has highly impressed me and taught me a score of new facts that I had never learnt of before. And for this, I must give it one of my highest evaluations - four stars.
