This Book Rocks!
By James E. Mackenzie
To the guy who is disappointed in the DSP content: The book's synopsis clearly indicates that it contains SOME DSP material with this statement: "updates on all crucial DSP elements", but that does not mean it's a DSP reference volume. If you want DSP design instruction, try "Digital Signal Processing Technology" or something similar. If you want SDR material, also seek out the appropriately-focused material. This book is meant to be a general design guide and, as such, I think you have done it quite a disservice by unfairly rating it so low, based on only a single aspect of it's otherwise excellent coverage of communications receiver topologies. It's like you had a temper tantrum.

Anyway, the content in this book is exactly what I was looking for! This book will be the first step I will use in my own designs. It breaks down each building block of superhet receivers in a practical manner with only the required mathematics to support them.

Subtitle misleading
By YS
I needed a book on software radio and so I gladly bought this book when I came across it. I expected a lot of detailed information about DSP and software radio.
It's a thick book: 700 plus pages. However, DSP related contents only add up to 50 pages or so. Detailed treatment of software radio cannot be found anywhere. Even the itemized index has only one instance of 'software radio'. This book is mostly on (analog) circuit design issues for amps, mixers, oscillators, PLLs, etc.
I strongly doubt the authors' intention of using the subtitle 'DSP, Software Radios, and Design'. If you want to know more about software radio, you wouldn't get it from this book.

Breach of Faith: Hurricane Katrina and the Near Death of a Great American City, by Jed Horne

Hurricane Katrina shredded one of the great cities of the South, and as levees failed and the federal relief effort proved lethally incompetent, a natural disaster became a man-made catastrophe. As an editor of New Orleans’ daily newspaper, the Pulitzer Prize—winning Times-Picayune, Jed Horne has had a front-row seat to the unfolding drama of the city’s collapse into chaos and its continuing struggle to survive.

As the Big One bore down, New Orleanians rich and poor, black and white, lurched from giddy revelry to mandatory evacuation. The thousands who couldn’t or wouldn’t leave initially congratulated themselves on once again riding out the storm. But then the unimaginable happened: Within a day 80 percent of the city was under water. The rising tides chased horrified men and women into snake-filled attics and onto the roofs of their houses. Heroes in swamp boats and helicopters braved wind and storm surge to bring survivors to dry ground. Mansions and shacks alike were swept away, and then a tidal wave of lawlessness inundated the Big Easy. Screams and gunshots echoed through the blacked-out Superdome. Police threw away their badges and joined in the looting. Corpses drifted in the streets for days, and buildings marinated for weeks in a witches’ brew of toxic chemicals that, when the floodwaters finally were pumped out, had turned vast reaches of the city into a ghost town.

Horne takes readers into the private worlds and inner thoughts of storm victims from all walks of life to weave a tapestry as intricate and vivid as the city itself. Politicians, thieves, nurses, urban visionaries, grieving mothers, entrepreneurs with an eye for quick profit at public expense–all of these lives collide in a chronicle that is harrowing, angry, and often slyly ironic.

Even before stranded survivors had been plucked from their roofs, government officials embarked on a vicious blame game that further snarled the relief operation and bedeviled scientists striving to understand the massive levee failures and build New Orleans a foolproof flood defense. As Horne makes clear, this shameless politicization set the tone for the ongoing reconstruction effort, which has been haunted by racial and class tensions from the start.
Katrina was a catastrophe deeply rooted in the politics and culture of the city that care forgot and of a nation that forgot to care. In Breach of Faith, Jed Horne has created a spellbinding epic of one of the worst disasters of our time.

From Publishers Weekly
Horne, metro editor of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, writes with the clipped, raw urgency of a thriller writer in this humanist account of what happened after the levees broke. As already widely reported, residents who ignored the mandatory evacuation order (thinking "Katrina... had all the makings of a flop") quickly found themselves surrounded by bloated corpses floating in toxic floodwaters and without a consolidated rescue effort. Horne quickly moves past the melodrama of a striking disaster to recount the stories of individuals caught in the storm's hellish aftermath or mired in the government's hamstrung response: a Louisiana State University climatologist goes head-to-head with the Army Corps of Engineers over inadequate flood protection and faulty levees; a former Black Panther provides emergency health care at a local mosque. Horne saves his sharpest barbs for President Bush and the Department of Homeland Security ("if Homeland Security... was what stood between America and the next 9/11, then... America was in deep trouble") for failing to muster an appropriate response. Big disasters spawn big books, and though Horne's isn't the definitive account, it's an honest, angry and wrenching response to a massively bungled catastrophe. (July)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Jed Horne, metro editor for the New Orleans Times-Picayune, uses his knowledge of the devastated area to his advantage. In Breach of Faith, he tells some compelling, important stories, despite the amount of coverage that Hurricane Katrina has received over the past year. While the book dutifully describes the events surrounding the disaster, Horne's journalistic skill works against him on occasion. He renders his scenes sharply, if sometimes without passion (as Ceci Connolly puts it, "I found myself yearning for the soul of the Katrina story, the smelly, quirky, gut-wrenching, deadly truth of a city disintegrating"). Most critics find that Horne has created a readable—and sometimes powerful—record of the event.

From Booklist
Horne, metro editor of the Times-Picayune, brings the enormous tragedy of Hurricane Katrina and the flooding of New Orleans down to a human scale by following several people swept up in the devastation from the day of the hurricane through the aftermath and recovery. They include a diabetic woman and her daughter trapped on a rooftop; a teenage son who evacuated then felt guilty about leaving his mother and sister; the social worker assisting victims in the Dome who was a mentor to the boy and later found his family; the university researcher who doggedly investigated the breaches and whose computer models had predicted the catastrophe that would befall the city if the levees were breached; the Charity Hospital doctor who worked to restore order when the hospital lost its power and watched as wealthier patients from nearby facilities were rescued ahead of her poor patients. Horne also steps back to analyze the factors that led to the catastrophe, including a long history of city and state political shenanigans, federal inattention and incompetence, and blatant racism. In the aftermath, he chronicles the social, political, legal, and psychological fallout--the lawsuits, suicides, and brain drain suffered by the city that was "one of America's last, fully intact regional cultures." Horne brings fresh insights in this engrossing account of the tragedy that uncovered a national disgrace of poverty and racism and raised questions about our nation's ability to address disasters wrought by nature. This is the One You're Looking For
By Susanne Carlisle
You're probably here because you are seeking coverage of this terrible, terrible disaster that is not influenced by ratings. A conscise, easy-to-follow insight that is unaffected, balanced and truthful. This is the book you're looking for.

As I am originally from New Orleans and have loved the city all my life, I was searching for the truth as well. As a full-time shelter volunteer in Mississippi, I realized--real quick--that we weren't getting accurate and unsensationalized reports on the news, save Anderson Cooper. I grew more and more frustrated with cable news, knowing that most reports bore no comparison to what I was hearing from the actual evacuees. Such shenanigans as repeated footage of one poor looted Walgreens over and over again didn't help matters any--not for the evacuees, who looked like criminals, (one thinks of the poor proud woman holding the Huggies up to her face in shame) not for the people who needed help, and certainly not for race relations in America. Anoterh case in point: Gerlado on Fox News holding up a baby on I-10. I would have much rather seen footage of Geraldo looting a Wallgreens in an effort to get some baby formula, but otherwise this parade of news was sadly misreprentative of the actual event and really didn't help anything but the advertisers.

Which is one reason I had such enormous and overwhelming affection for the folks at the Times-Picayune, the vernerable and ancient daily paper of New Orleans. They never, ever missed an issue--not one day, even as the lower floors were flooded. As my specialty in the shelter was helping evacuees with the internet, I repeatedly turned to the Times-Picayune website. It was an accurate and reliable source of information that I and other Orleanians--many who had never sat in front of a computer in their lives--was immensely greatful for.

So with that being said, wouldn't it be great if one of those Times-Picayune guys wrote a book? How about the Metro editor? I mean, until Gerlado comes out with a book on the disaster (of his career) I will recommend this book as your most accurate source of What Really Happened.

Jed Horne, who won the Pulitzer Prize for his work on Katrina has written a well-documented from-the-trenches account of the event. Unlike The Great Deluge (which for some reason seems to keep plugging the title as a name for the event) it is very succinct in its account, and as all good newspapermen do, the prose is pared down to the essentials and easy to follow: I now fully understand the storm's dynamics, and why it was so particularly bad. And less pages, in this case, is much much more. I wrote a favorable review of The Great Deluge, but this is a much better narrative than Briknley's book and thankfully, comes with maps for the dizzying layout of Greater New Orleans plus a map showing the flow of the storm surge, which I found enormously helpful. I found the lack of maps in The Great Deluge inexcuseable--New Orleans--with the winding river is just to difficult to comprehend without one. It doesn't hurt that writing is just so d*** good. Here's a selection from the end of chapter Two, entitled "When Wallyworld Closes at Four", talking about the start of the contraflow:

Within twenty-four hours, mobile signboards would go up at key junctions across the interstate system that converged on Southeast Louisiana, the lettering picked out in flashing amber dots against a black background: NEW ORLEANS EXITS CLOSED. Blink. NEW ORLEANS EXITS CLOSED--and suddenly, a name once evocative of elegance and devil-may-care good times, a haven of sophistication in the hardscrabble South, carried overtones of catastrophe: a Bablon, a Chernoblyl. Blink. NEW ORLEANS EXITS CLOSED.

So, this was the book I had waited for and thankfully, a case of less being decidedly more. And this is the book you have been looking for: truth in action, without a political agenda (such as coming out just before the New Orleans mayoral elections), or a rating concern in sight. I especially appreciated his narrative threads concerning the victims which he skillfully weaves together to form one of the best pieces of journalism I've seen in a long, long time. Brilliant narrative non-fiction, above bar below the levees.

The Hurricane From Hell Meets The Bureaucracy From Hell
By C. Hutton
Only two recent events of this young century have spawned countless books : 9-11 and Hurricane Katrina. The former has the headstart in volume of books written about a man-made disaster. The latter was a hydrid disaster, part nature and part man-made. The title has several meanings. First, the breach of the levees in New Orleans; second, the loss of faith in government on a local, state and federal; and three, the title echoes T.H. White's account of an earlier loss of faith government in "Breach of Faith : The Fall of Richard Nixon" (1975), another story of an earlier loss of faith in government.

The author lived through the hurricane and his writing has an edge of anger at the incompetence throughout the disaster pre-planning and the disaster response. Unlike the much longer (716 pages) "The Great Deluge" by Douglas Brinkley, "Breach of Faith has a narrower focus on New Orleans itself (432 pages). No public figure is spared (the president, the governor, the mayor among others) and Fema is single out above all other governmental for ineptness. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard did an outstanding job preparing for the hurricane and rescuing the residents afterwards. With a "you are there" writing style and countless stories to tell, Mr. Horne does a superb job of telling the story of how a great city nearly died.

Reads like a thriller - if only it was.
By Marc Wasserman
There are several books out about Hurricane Katrina and the response, but none of them have the tremendously powerful "you are there" feeling of this book. Jed Horne writes the facts from the ground, detailing people who were there and how they survived.

Horne details expertly how people reacted as their neighborhoods started flooding, how they managed (or did not manage) to get to the Superdome, what went wrong there, how the response was mismanaged, and gives excellent insights into what went wrong and what should happen next. The chapter detailing how the interns at Charity Hospital survived and cared for their patients during the power outages and flooding is particularly powerful.

As I said in my title, the book reads like a thriller. There are some portions where he describes the power of the floods, people dying, and the terrible response and you think that this would make a terrific fictional movie. It's hard to believe it happened, and Horne's book is a stirring account of the hurricane and its aftermath. I highly recommend this book.

Pacification: The American Struggle For Vietnam's Hearts And Minds, by Richard A Hunt

During the Vietnam War, the United States embarked on an unusual crusade on behalf of the government of South Vietnam. Known as the pacification program, it sought to help South Vietnam’s government take root and survive as an independent, legitimate entity by defeating communist insurgents and promoting economic development and political reforms. In this book, Richard Hunt provides the first comprehensive history of America’s “battle for hearts and minds,” the distinctive blending of military and political approaches that took aim at the essence of the struggle between North and South Vietnam.Hunt concentrates on the American role, setting pacification in the larger political context of nation building. He describes the search for the best combination of military and political action, incorporating analysis of the controversial Phoenix program, and illuminates the difficulties the Americans encountered with their sometimes reluctant ally. The author explains how hard it was to get the U.S. Army involved in pacification and shows the struggle to yoke divergent organizations (military, civilian, and intelligence agencies) to serve one common goal. The greatest challenge of all was to persuade a surrogate—the Saigon government—to carry out programs and to make reforms conceived of by American officials. The book concludes with a careful assessment of pacification’s successes and failures. Would the Saigon government have flourished if there had been more time to consolidate the gains of pacification? Or was the regime so fundamentally flawed that its demise was preordained by its internal contradictions? This pathbreaking book offers startling and provocative answers to these and other important questions about our Vietnam experience.

From Publishers Weekly
This is a major look at the so-called other war: the combined efforts of the U.S. and Saigon governments to win the allegiance of the South Vietnamese populace in the struggle against the Viet Cong. Hunt describes how various pacification efforts were put under a single authority in 1967 with the creation of the Civil Operations and Revolutionary Development Support (CORDS), headed in turn by Robert Komer and William Colby. He reveals that the Phoenix Program, centerpiece of the effort to dismantle Viet Cong leadership, was originally a system for pooling information from South Vietnamese intelligence agencies. Hunt shows how the program hurt not only the enemy but also the allies. "There remains a profound ambivalence about the Phoenix Program," he writes, for ordinary Vietnamese citizens were caught in the dragnets that killed the Viet Cong. His authoritative study provides a clear account of the pacification effort in each of the four military-political regions of South Vietnam, essential to an understanding of the war itself. One odd shortcoming: the short shrift given to the Marines' Combined Action Platoon (CAP) program. All pacification programs failed in the end, but the CAP was arguably working the best at the time of the U.S. pullout. Hunt is director of the army's Oral History Program. Illustrations.

From Library Journal
Vietnam war literature is heavily weighted toward traditional military history: campaign histories, battle studies, weapons analysis, officer's memoirs, soldier's narratives, and political and diplomatic treatises. It is also notable for the almost complete lack of accounts by South Vietnamese participants and scholars and the scarcity of works on American assistance in nation-building and pacification. The pacification program is expertly detailed by Hunt, the director of the U.S. Army Center of Military History Oral History Program. This exhaustive study will stand as a benchmark in research on U.S. civil and military initiatives in countering NVA and VC insurgency. This account of the pacification program is certain to be of interest to students of the conflict. The several counterinsurgency efforts are clearly presented, and the evaluation of their effectiveness is supported by extensive research. An essential addition to academic Vietnam collections.

Power Speaking For Kids - Teachers Edition, by Pauline Binkley

PowerSpeaking for Kids - Parents Edition is step by step manual designed for teachers to teach children (K thru 6+) the fundamentals of public speaking in a public or private school classroom environment.

We often hear stories from our participants of childhood humiliation and embarrassment during some long-past speaking nightmare in junior high or high school. Some have vowed never to speak in public again. These unforgettable experiences leave deep scars that can seriously limit a person’s effectiveness in adult life.

This remarkable book offers a solution to that problem. By teaching children in the early grades to speak confidently in front of groups, the adult fear of public speaking will vanish. This is a skill that should be taught in every elementary school in the country. In Pauline Binkley’s class I saw firsthand proof of this, not only from the children, but also from the parents. They were ecstatic to see their kids mastering a difficult skill that will serve them well their entire lives.
Frederick Gilbert, Ph.D., Developer, PowerSpeaking

Your decision to teach your children PowerSpeaking for Kids is a very good one. The ability to be confident and persuasive in front of others is critical. Developing this ability is what PowerSpeaking for Kids is all about.

Very few people are born with natural public speaking ability. But most of us are born with the “tools” to be effective speakers. These tools are legs, eyes, arms, and voice.

Because of limited instructional time, the development of speaking skills is often left to “older” children. We must teach the children at a young age.

This manual was written for Kindergarten and Elementary Grade students. These are the ideal grades in which to learn and practice public speaking skills. This can be done just by teaching the basic ground rules in this manual and by providing much practice in all areas of the curriculum.

The lessons are designed to be presented sequentially. For grades K thru 3, it is recommended that you start each school year with the first lesson and depending on the maturity and experience of your students, do as many lessons as you can. Parents of upper elementary grade students (grades 4 to 6+) could use the book as a learning base, adding and fine-tuning to higher expectations.

Before you begin to teach the lessons, I encourage you to read through the whole manual. This way you will attain an overall understanding of the program and valuable insight of what to expect.

Please keep in mind; PowerSpeaking for Kids is not about perfection. This program teaches basic speaking skills with a focus on practicing them.

Parents who empower their students with speaking skills will be rewarded with a tremendous sense of accomplishment. It takes practice, patience, and sensitivity.

Power Speaking = Confident Kids!
By Katherine Y.
I have used this book for MANY years!! I'm always amazed at how even my shyest students become powerful speakers and confidently get up in front of an audience by the end of the year!! They know how to plant their feet, make eye contact, use large gestures, and even move with transitions as they speak. This book is teacher-friendly, including a script for teachers to follow and anticipated student responses. My students love the illustrations; they are clear, funny, and make the point! My kids BEG to do Power Speaking each week! I HIGHLY recommend Power Speaking to EVERY teacher!!

Great text - would love a hard copy!
By Julia Johnson
This is a perfect text for teaching the kids' speech class at our homeschool co-op. It lays out great "ground rules" for public speaking, and the structure of the text works well for me. We supplement this with presentations - a different type of literature every week (story, fable, humorous poetry, etc.). I only wish I could print the pictures and exercises!! Haven't found a way to do it from a kindle app. I hope they make this available in a print copy.

There is hope, even on the darkest of days

Katariina Rosenblatt was a lonely and abused young girl, yearning to be loved, wanting attention. That made her the perfect target. On an ordinary day, she met a confident young woman--someone Kat wished she could be like--who pretended to be a friend while slowly luring her into a child trafficking ring. A cycle of false friendships, threats, drugs, and violence kept her trapped.

As Kat shares her harrowing experiences, her ultimate escape, and her passionate efforts to now free other victims, you'll see that not only is sex trafficking happening frighteningly close to home--it's also something that can be stopped. Stolen is a warning, a celebration of survival, and a beacon of hope that will inspire you.

From Chosen to Stolen and Back
By Dr Conrade Yap
Trust is good. Misplaced trust is not. The former keeps one safe and secure. The latter can trick one into sex trafficking. This is exactly what the author of this book had personally experienced. Having trusted a decent looking lady called Mary, who appeared to be a close confidante, a good friend, and a helpful samaritan, she was eventually manipulated, deceived, and her innocence stolen from her. With deep honesty about her own perceptions and urgency to let her story heighten the need to be careful with strangers, Rosenblatt traces her childhood story where she was unwittingly "groomed for the life of sex trafficking" at a tender age of 13. With Mary, Rosenblatt felt treated with respect, with love, and with dignity. Unfortunately, she failed to pick up signals along the way, falling into the trap of being chosen. Her need for a loving dad was falsely met by tricks and traps. Gradually, she entered into a spiral of drugs and deceit. Unlike some stories where girls are captured and forced into sex slavery against their wills, Rosenblatt's story highlights a different kind of deception that makes victims go back willingly to the perpetrators. Why? Answer: Drugs and misplaced trust. The cycle is horrendous. She needed money to feed her drug habits. She obtains money through sex and in turn needs more drugs to sustain this vicious cycle, willlingly! Her story is also a sad one. Born to immigrant parents who divorced when she was three, her biological dad sexually abused her, and often was violent toward her and the family. She had no permanent place to call home. She was even molested by her babysitter!

With story after story about her being trapped, escaped, enslaved, freed, and the turbulences of flowing in and out of drugs and a horrid lifestyle, Rosenblatt writes in such a way as to warn readers that such things are very real especially in first world countries. Sex trafficking is not just about sex. It involves heavy use of drugs, abuse of children, gangs, guns, deceptions, and downplayed by a society that often does not seem to care.

Fortunately, she was among the 15% of victims who managed to escape eventually. The second half of the book details her slow climb out of the pit of darkness. It begins with affirmative actions that bring back semblance of dignity to her self-worth. She tried modeling but was soon facing another different kind of challenges: teen pregnancy, early marriage and subsequently separated. She went back to school and graduated from Trinity University with a college degree in Human Resources Management. She started a business, got another degree (law), and eventually set up HOPE, a ministry to help others avoid the traps of sex trafficking.

Rosenblatt's story is not simply a story of someone who had their innocence and youth stolen from underneath their noses. It is a warning for the rest of us to sit up and take note of the dangers that can impact young lives. Parents need to know about the vulnerabilities their children often face. Being over-protective in such cases like Rosenblatt's can be a life saver too. Throughout the book, Rosenblatt reveals how she felt God speaking and guiding her. It is a miracle she was able to escape the entire trade in the first place. Readers will be glad to see how Rosenblatt, instead of remaining bitter and angry about her past, chooses to do something positive about it. She is an active contributor to the public through her legal expertise, her powerful communications, her deep understanding of the insidious workings of sex trade, and above all, her deeply frank sharing of her own life. The book is surely an indictment of how society can deteriorate to such a pathetic level, where victims of sex trafficking can become recruiters and perpetrators as well. Something must break such a vicious cycle. In fact, Someone needs to intervene. Rosenblatt's story is a testimony of how God had helped to intervene.

Rating: 4.25 stars of 5.

A Must Read!
By Laura Davis
What happens to lonely, abused children coming from dysfunctional families, who are looking for love and attention? In most cases they are stolen by sex traffickers and forced into a life of prostitution and sexual slavery.

In Stolen by Katariina Rosenblatt, the author shares her story of how she was deceived by someone who came along and presented themselves as a friend. This person gave Katariina the love and encouragement she needed that she wasn't getting at home. Unfortunately, it was all an act and before Katariina knew what was happening she was on drugs and a sex slave by the age of thirteen.
But Katariina didn't fall prey to sex traffickers just once, she became a victim again and again, after escaping her abusers more than once. Through it all, however, she had moments when she could hear God speak to her and knew He had a different plan for her. It was through her deliverance at a Billy Graham crusade prior to her abuse that kept her believing in God and eventually surrendering and trusting in Him.

This story, while disturbing because of it's subject matter, is at the same time uplifting, because of what God did in the author's life. How she escaped trafficking, drugs and became the person she is today, (with a PhD behind her name) is a marvellous testimony to God's faithfulness when we trust in Him.

I highly encourage all parents to read this book, because it is very thorough on the signs you need to be aware of in regards to your child becoming a victim of the sex trade. You may think your child is safe, but it is the most vulnerable (those with economic disadvantages, those without a father figure, single parent homes, abuse within the home, exposure to drugs and/or alcohol within the home) that are susceptible to becoming victims. And it isn't just girls but boys too that are vulnerable to sex traffickers.

This book needs to be read by everyone, not just parents. It needs to be read so that you could spot someone in trouble at an airport, McDonald's (yes traffickers wait there for your children), hotels or motels and schools (yes, they are there too). I have learned so much and praise God that Katariina survived and is now instrumental in saving children and getting them out of the hands of their abusers.

Read this book, you won't regret it.

Makes One Think
By Allergykidmom
First off, I am very critical when I read books. I tend to see them as more than just a story. I have a bad habit of critiquing books while I read them. It is just what I do. I love reading and do enjoy different styles, but sometimes have a harder time with some over others. This unfortunately is what happened with this book. Don't get me wrong, the story is an amazing one. For someone to come out of a situation as strong as Katariina did says a lot but, it's just her way of writing her story that I felt came across like somewhat of a mix between a book and a lecture. I also felt at times she jumped around too much. Like I said, sometimes I can be very critical, and in this case this is what happened.

I do feel as though Katariina is a very strong person. To have had a full life filled with one heartbreak after another, most people wouldn't be able to say 'I made it and I am here to stay'. But her will, strength and trust in God brought her through her tough moments and had her come out on top a true survivor.

While thinking about sex trafficking, I don't tend to think of it as happening in the United States. That is probably where a lot of us go wrong. We tend to think it is something that happens in other countries, so our children won't necessarily become victims to it. This story let me know that it is right in our "backyard". I also learned that it is not necessarily just "street" prostitution that kids get sold into. It can be a friend, neighbour or just someone you least expect. Stolen, shows us that we need to keep an eye on our children and make sure we know who they are hanging around and what they are doing. They may feel like we are overbearing, but I would rather be a somewhat overbearing person, than to have my child be sold into sex trafficking. And like she states in the book. More so than not, people don't tend to make it out and those that do make it out, don't tend to live past their twenties.

When you reach the end of the book, there is a section on how your church can start up a ministry to help others that are in need of help.

I think this is a book that most parents should read. Especially those who have the quieter type of children (which she mentions as prime targets).

The Kindness of Women: A Novel, by J. G. Ballard

In this sequel to his award-winning Empire of the Sun, young James returns to England at the end of World War II. He stumbles through medical study at Cambridge, trains briefly as an RAF pilot in Canada, and marries. When his wife dies suddenly, Jim is thrust into the violence and sexual promiscuity of the sixties. Penetrating and wise, J. G. Ballard's biting social commentary and pushing of boundaries make this semi-autobiographical novel a small classic.

From Publishers Weekly
Ballard's sequel to his autobiographical epic Empire of the Sun treats the subsequent events of his life, offering visceral immediacy and piercing honesty. This title was cited in PW 's 1992 "red-and-black" issue as disappointing publishers' sales expectations in hardcover.

From Library Journal
This elegantly structured sequel to Empire of the Sun ( LJ 11/1/84) begins again with a boy's traumatic experiences in Japanese-occupied Shanghai and ends some 40 years later with his viewing a film based on his novel about those experiences. Before this "last act in a profound catharsis," however, the narrator Jim stumbles through medical study at Cambridge, trains briefly as an RAF pilot in Canada, marries, and suffers domestic tragedy. Jim both documents and participates in the violence and excess of the 1960s, but at various moments of crisis he is fortunate enough to experience the redemptive love of women. With penetrating topical commentary and abiding wisdom, this well-crafted novel should enjoy wide appeal. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 6/1/91.

From Kirkus Reviews
In Empire of the Sun (1984), Ballard turned his searing childhood memories--of prison-camp experiences in WW II Shanghai- -into fiercely effective autobiographical fiction. This episodic sequel begins again in Shanghai but quickly moves to England, as narrator ``Jim'' explores sex, marriage, fatherhood, and friendship through the Fifties, Sixties, and Seventies. The opening chapters return to the horror of the Shanghai bombing and the Lunghua prison-camp; worst of all, at war's end, 15-year-old Jim witnesses the torture-murder of a young Chinese prisoner--a monstrosity that will haunt him always. As a med student at Cambridge he tries to exorcise corpse-filled memories by calmly dissecting a cadaver. A short stint in the RAF--another attempt at confronting the violence within--is equally unsuccessful. So Jim instead forgets the past by settling into a cozy domestic present: marriage to earthy Miriam, three children, a quiet life in suburban Shepperton (near England's film studios). But Miriam's sudden accidental death, during a vacation in Spain, reawakens Jim's sense of dislocation--just in time for the ``crazed'' 1960's. He tries LSD, unorthodox sex (with a rich, kinky young American woman), curates an exhibition of crashed cars--``a potent symbol in the new logic of violence and sensation that ruled our lives.'' He broods upon the media-zation of postwar society, as embodied by a friend who becomes a TV psychology-guru...and ultimately films his own death from cancer. But the wounds from Shanghai never fully heal, not even when Jim--after the success of Empire--has a cathartic (and erotic) reunion with the governess (now 60-ish) whom he lusted after as a teenager. The psychology here often seems simplistic; so does Ballard's socio-historical view of the postwar decades. And the many sexual encounters are stronger on clinical detail than emotional impact. Still: sporadically involving and occasionally disturbing memoir/fiction from an always-interesting writer. -- Copyright 1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

JG Ballard - post-Shanghai
By Sheila H. Mclaren
My expectations were very much off the mark after reading "Empire of the Sun" in which Jamie Ballard is a child - I forgot that JG Ballard had to grow up! And grow up he did - thoroughly traumatized by his years in Shanghai and in a Japanese camp for civilian internees. Jim Ballard was born in 1930, in the privileged British area of Shanghai where life seemed to be one long party. The British were accustomed to being "top dog" and living in luxury. In 1937 Japan invaded northern China, including Shanghai. Strangely, the British saw the atrocities as they took place, and seemed to view them as some kind of entertainment which could not ever affect them. The Japanese in Shanghai bided their time, showing extraordinary patience, and staying well clear of the International Settlement and the French Concession - until the day that their compatriots bombed Pearl Harbour in December 1941. This gave them permission to take possession of the International Settlement. They did it with a vengeance, and most foreign nationals were interned in a number of camps within 10 to 20 km of Shanghai. Young James Ballard and his friends lived a lifetime of experience in camp - this one called Lunghua. "Empire of the Sun" is about Lunghua. This book is about the aftermath. Only when the war had ended, and he and his mother were repatriated to England, did the trauma gradually catch up with him. For many years, he and friends sought only war, violence, death, drugs and sex. Although he married and had children, he remained haunted, with thoughts of Shanghai not ever far from his mind. Everything he did and thought during the 1960s and '70s seemed to be dictated by memories of Japanese atrocities, dead and dying Chinese, and the bomb dropped on Nagasaki: Wildly dangerous driving and drug-taking, an obsession with another, final nuclear war, and countless sexual encounters. The book, although not an "easy read", and with the sexual encounters perhaps sickening to many people, is beautifully written, and conveys subtly but thoroughly the effect that childhood trauma can have on later life. Ballard did eventually seem to find some peace within himself, probably anchored by the great love he had for his wife and children and by his tremendous capacity for writing. Although the violence of the tale is horrifying, this is a book well worth reading. It taught this reader a great deal - about history, about people, and - perhaps above all - about how appallingly difficult it is to understand cultures different from our own.

The biography as fiction
By Michael Battaglia
Empire of the Sun was one of the best examples of putting your life up to a critical analysis and staring unflinchingly at it . . . Ballard's portrayal of himself during World War II as a child has to rank as one of the more honest (even when it's not so flattering) attempts at a self-charactization that I can really only compare to Norman Mailer's Armies of the Night. Here he continues his own story, using the first person this time out and extending the narrative past World War II and nearly into his present. The beginning is a bit off for those who have read Empire of the Sun since some of the details gone over don't seem to coincide with the events we learned in the previous book but he manages to again evoke its' dreamlike qualities. From there it's mostly episodic and carried by Ballard's keen eye for events and gift for description, through his eyes the sixties and beyond become almost a shared hallucination, something that you wake up from and you're not sure if it really happened or not. There's no overarching narrative to the book, though his quest to overcome the wounds that were opened by his time in the internment camp is a running theme that partly gets resolved in the end, during the time of the making of the Empire of the Sun movie. Still, like real life there are jagged loose ends, lost characters and a graceful melancholy that holds everything together well. Perhaps the only complaint are the sex scenes, far from offensive, they seem almost cold and sterile, like Ballard was sitting there taking notes during the acts themselves, which could be the point for all I know. Because it covers so much more time it doesn't have the searing focus that the previous novel did, but the wide variety of events and times are engaging in their own right and just when you think Ballard has exhausted his ability to put a new spin on describing things, he pulls another effortless phrase out that can't help but stick in your head. A book you probably have to experience more than read, those coming out of Empire of the Sun wanting to see more will probably come away satisfied.

A starburst in your imagination.
By markbearn@aol.com
'The Kindness of Women' is one of the most extraordinary books I have ever read - it gripped me with the shock of seeing deep into a man's hurt but inspired psyche, it left me weeping in pity for Ballard and marvelling at his survival. And laughing out loud. The account of Ballard's life after Singapore, this is no ordinary narrative autobiography - rather, a series of chapters each of which might stand as a small masterpiece alone, each like the fragment of a smashed mirror reflecting a piece of Ballard's life in microcosm - his wife and her tragic death, his friends, his children (the chapter called 'Magic World' should open every 'anthology of happiness' ever published), his involvement with the 60s through his crashed car exhibition (out of which came Crash, the basis of Cronenburg's film) and his fascination with television. Women provide the linking thread through it all - the ones who Ballard loved, made love to, or in turn loved him - his wife, Miriam, most unforgettably. But the key is an account of a man coming to terms with himself and his violent childhood - in the end what one leaves this book with is a sense of the kindness of Ballard. For this beautiful, modest, deceptively simple book, shot through with images and symbols of suffering, pain, madness and death, is in the end, more than any of his other books, a celebration of life, of love, of friends and of people. Towards the end, Ballard remarks how it had taken him most of his life to realise how these simple things were what made him happy - the rest were just dross. For anyone who has ever questioned their life, or felt great pain in their heart or in their soul, or experienced suffering of any kind - this book offeres the promise of redemption and catharsis. READ IT. It is a work for us all, a book of which one can truly say it has enriched the world. Thank you, James.
