About the Author

R.C. Hibbeler graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana with a BS in Civil Engineering (major in Structures) and an MS in Nuclear Engineering. He obtained his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University.

Hibbeler’s professional experience includes postdoctoral work in reactor safety and analysis at Argonne National Laboratory, and structural and stress analysis work at Chicago Bridge and Iron, as well as Sargent and Lundy in Chicago. �He has practiced engineering in Ohio, New York, and Louisiana.

Hibbeler currently teaches both civil and mechanical engineering courses at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. In the past he has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Youngstown State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Union College.

Superior to Beer & Johnston

I am a sophomore mechanical engineering student that absolutely never ever pays attention in class. So this always leaves me learning 100% from a book.

At my school, we were assigned Beer & Johnston's 8th Edition for Statics & Dynamics. I used it all through my statics course and managed to get an A. However when it came to dynamics, the material gets more difficult to grasp (because it's moving away from you).

I began to look online for a supplemental book, I read a lot of negative reviews for the hibbeler book, but decided to go for it. I ordered this book and began reading the chapters and working the example problems. I then attempted the assigned homework from the beer&johnston's book. After learning the material from the hibbeler book, I found it MUCH MUCH easier to take on the problems from the beer&johnston's book.

Here's an example. On our past section in dynamics (Principle of Work) several students got hung up on an assigned problem for about two days. Once I got to it, I knew exactly how to handle the problem because I was properly taught how to handle it (from the hibbeler book). I looked in the beer&johnston's book and they completely skipped over it.

To me this book is equivalent to having a much better teacher, because it is the book that teaches me everything.

Another thing, about the solution manuals. No engineering book is going to come with worked out solutions like the calculus books tend to do. The objective of these higher level courses is to teach the student how to think and analytically solve problems rather than rely on raw memorization.

I did not mean for this to be so long-winded, but I feel that a lot of people took the course and struggled and are blaming it on the book. If the book was any easier, you wouldn't learn as much. This is a great book for those that want to learn the real deal.

See if you can get an older version

- conciseness: It doesn't spend pages trying to tell you 'F=0
- example problems: the examples actually show a variety of scenarios, and not just the ones where they practically give you 3 out of the 4 variables in an equation.
- problem sets: good range of difficulty; plenty to practice with
- problem answers: basically 3/4 of all the problems in the book have answers in the back (except for chapter 7. there's a whole bunch with no answers for some reason). Generally if the problem number is divisible by 4, it's not there.
- fundamental problem solutions: partial solutions to all fundamental problems are in the back. Even though they're not explicitly step-by-step, they're not bad. Plus the fundamental problems aren't that hard to begin with.

CONS:
-weird notation and variable names: like for work-energy, Hibbeler uses T for kinetic energy for some reason. .

-The actual principles explained in this edition(you know, the actual statics and dynamics?) haven't changed since the previous edition, or the one before that... or the one before that one. Come to think of it, how much of earth's physics has been drastically altered in the past 3 years? not much, if anything at all. But for some reason publishers are still compelled to push out a new edition every 3 years. Apparently our cranes and structures are in danger of flying into the sky, so now you'll have to buy this super awesome newly improved edition only to find out that it tells you the exact same thing the 12th edition did. But you won't know that until you spent $200 and opened the packaging.

Ranting aside... is it a good book? yeah definitely. It's probably one of the best textbooks I have, and I'll keep it after I graduate and for as long as I'm in the engineering world. But is it necessary to put out a new edition every 2-3 yrs and get professors all excited and force their students to buy it? no. See if you can convince your professor to let you buy an older edition for much much cheaper, especially if s/he uses mastering engineering.

**If your prof doesn't use Mastering Engineering, keep in mind though, that the end-of-section problems in older editions are in a different order, and there are some new problems in here that weren't in previous editions.**

(Then again, you can still buy an older version and just ask somebody with this edition to see if he'll let you take a picture of the exercise sets in his book. Problem solved.)

Good, but could be better

I've used both this book and "Engineering Mechanics: Statics" by the same author. Two things jump out at me:
1. This book needs an accompanying solutions manual. There is very little discussion of the material you are supposed to apply in the problems, and no way check if you worked them correctly.
2. This series is riddled with errors, typos, omissions, etc. Be warned, I have come across many mis-typed or incomplete problems, answers, etc.
Neither of these considerations doom the book, but they highlight definite areas for improvement.

Comprehensive

I grew up reading the EEG book written initially by Drs. Klauss and Daly from Mayo which is currently edited by Drs. Ebersole and Pedley. It is a model of clarity, like an old friend, whom you can turn for advise. That being said, I started reading Dr. Nidermeyer's book on being encouraged by my mentor and I find some pleasant surprises:
The Good:
1. It has more comprehensive coverage and includes current topics like high frequency oscillations or infra-slow cortical potentials. The discussion on EEG source localization is updated and informative.
2. It has fairly decent introductory chapters on MEG and EEG based brain-computer interface systems.
3. Some other smaller details are mentioned, which might be omitted in other textbooks e.g. EEG findings in less frequently seen epilepsy syndromes like MAE or EMWA; and, epileptiform K-complexes in JME.

The Not so good:
1. Sometimes the book is not very readable and assumes a fair amount of background knowledge.

On the whole, a wonderful, comprehensive treatise on EEG. It is a treat to read, though not for the beginner.

As an aside, Dr. Blume referred to it as a 'monstrous textbook' in his awesome lecture during recent AES 2011 !!

Kindle edition is subpar

The text of the book of course is excellent.

This review has to do with the kindle edition, which makes some effort at reproducing graphics on the downloaded file in colour. Unfortunately the images have been mindlessly down-sized in resolution by whatever image processor is used to be very blurry and completely sub-par for a book that obviously requires sharp, crisp images. Purchasers of this book on the kindle (especially Kindle for iPad) would expect to be able to see the images in as sharp detail as in the hardcopy edition, and would be well aware that there will be a trade-off in terms of more memory used on their devices.

Unfortunately the publishers for Kindle clearly did not take this into consideration and over-compressed the images in the file and therefore the textbook is not very useable. I would very happily take a file that was much larger and slower to download for better image quality, especially when I am paying so much for this textbook. Hopefully they will address this in an update, but I'm not holding my breath. Very disappointing as I was hoping that this would be the beginnings of electronic medical textbooks being usable.

Caveat emptor.

Classic - but ebook version has bad figures

This is essential book for a clinical neurophysiologist. This ebook version has bad low resolution figures making it useless because fine EEG curves should / must be reproduced in high resolution. There also seems to be some wrong figures. Also, the concept of this kind of ebooks should be further developed to be really useful in clinical practice. It is very difficult to find certain themes if you are in a hurry (some problem with the hard covers version also ;).

“Mark Owen” is a pseudonym for Matt Bissonnette, a Navy SEAL who took part in the 2011 raid on a compound in Pakistan that resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden. His muscular memoir was cowritten by Maurer, a journalist who has covered American special-ops forces for nearly a decade, including a stint as an embedded reporter in Iraq. Owen was already a SEAL at the time of the 9/11 attacks; the book begins shortly thereafter, as he is qualifying for the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group (otherwise known as the famed SEAL Team Six), and follows him through various missions, culminating with a detailed account of the planning and execution of the assault on bin Laden’s compound. His version of events has already sparked some controversy—no surprise there, since the mission itself is still a controversial subject—but it doesn’t feel as though Owen intended to add fuel to the fire. About the Author
Mark Owen is a former member of the United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group, commonly known as SEAL Team Six. In his many years as a Navy SEAL, he has participated in hundreds of missions around the globe, including the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips in the Indian Ocean in 2009. Owen was a team leader on Operation Neptune Spear in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on May 1, 2011, which resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden. Owen was one of the first men through the door on the third floor of the terrorist mastermind’s hideout, where he witnessed Bin Laden’s death. Mark Owen’s name and the names of the other SEALs mentioned in No Easy Day have been changed for their security.

Kevin Maurer has covered special operations forces for nine years. He has been embedded with the Special Forces in Afghanistan six times, spent a month in 2006 with special operations units in east Africa, and has embedded with U.S. forces in Iraq and Haiti. He is the author of five books, including several about special operations.

A Gripping Story from a Boots on the Ground Perspective

In No Easy Day, you see an account of the raid to capture or kill Osama Bin Laden from the eyes on someone who was there - one of four team leaders on the ground that night. The account is most definitely gripping, I could not put it down and I skipped sleeping to finish it - yes, there will be hell to pay at work tomorrow. But, nowhere close to as much hell as the operators in DevGru (aka Seal Team 6) undertook to get into DevGru and to stay there.

The first thing that struck me was just how elite a team the US sent on that raid. To be a member of DevGru you have to ALREADY be a Navy Seal. Most who apply don't make it, but they go back to being a "regular" SEAL which has nothing regular about it. For the Bin Laden raid, they essentially assembled an All Star team of the most seasoned DevGru operators from multiple teams and put them together on a team consisting of the best of the best of the best.

My next takeaway on the actual raid itself was how many things actually went wrong. Here you have the best of the best taking part in a historic mission, and all kinds of things start falling apart. Yet, amazingly (to me), despite all the problems, it still worked out. Thats because everything that could have gone wrong was previously anticipated, contingency plans made, and all back up plans were rehearsed multiple times. While I considered the mission to be successful, the impression I get is the members of DevGru thought they could have done it much better. (I'll leave out the details as to avoid spoiling the story).

This leads me to my next takeaway which is just how devoted to perfection and exceptional performance these operators seem to be. One thing that surprised me is how much they train when they aren't deployed. If they aren't jumping out of helicopters on a real mission, they are jumping out of real helicopters for practice. The missions are abroad and the training sessions are state side but often away from home too.

In short, these guys don't ever seem to be at home very much, it just takes that much work and training to be as good as these guys are. I for one am glad they are on OUR side and my appreciation for them has certainly gone way up after reading this book,

No Easy Day very much gives you a view into both the Bin Laden raid but also the years and in some cases decades of demanding work that led up to it... And the title IS accurate, there doesn't seem to be ANY easy days as a member of DevGru.

Overall a gripping story on the Bin Laden raid with excellent perspective on the life of the operators in DevGru (Seal Team 6).

Excellent. An intense, well written, and captivating memoir. I finished it in one day.

I am usually a very slow reader and my attention often wanders, especially with non-fiction. This book though kept my attention completely. From the author's opening notes about how nothing in this book violates secrecy or operational security to the very last chapter I was completely captivated. The writing is superb and the flow of the book is great.

I highly recommend that you read this book. It is excellent not just as history, or a story, but also a book about how winners think. Guys like "Owen" look at challenges and life completely differently than average people do, and reading this book gave me a wonderful insight into his head. To get an honest view into the thought processes of someone like "Owen" is a unique and incredible opportunity.

I really enjoyed this book and feel like I learned a tremendous amount from it. I highly recommend it.

People who are bashing the book for being a sell out or violating secrecy either have not read the book or are looking at it from a very unique and odd perspective. I find it especially perplexing that some people are bashing him using his experience to gain fame and profit. Considering he wrote under a pseudonym and is donating a majority of the book's proceeds to charity, I can't really understand these accusations. He explains throughout the book that he was motivated to become a SEAL, in part, by reading a similar book about missions in Vietnam. I think that his primary motivation in writing this book is to inform the public, especially those very very few who might make up a future generation of SEALs and Delta operators.

Mark Owen does a good job keeping your attention with details of his evolution to DEVGRU, giving you a glimpse of what it takes to be the best of the best. It's a good read for someone who wants to get an idea what happens on SEAL missions.

It was brilliant. And although I didn't understand every word I ...

This book was part of our Spanish lessons. We would read some, look up the words we didn't know and then write sentences with them. After our lessons stopped I continued to read the book. I found that I couldn't put it down. The unique thing about it was that it was written in the voice of the dog Enzo. It was brilliant. And although I didn't understand every word I was able to understand the plot and know what happened.

Este libro nos relata la historia de una familia desde un punto de vista de una mascota, nos cuenta como a veces cosas tan obvias no las tomamos en cuenta y como muchas veces hay que luchar para superar los obstáculos que se nos presentan diariamente. La historia esta bien contada, es claro y bien redactado.

No encontré ningún error en el formato del libro y la verdad se los recomiendo.
