I'm in to chapter 29 or so and I've got to say that this is just a masterful guide to living your life as an also-ran.

Bregman offers stellar advice like 'stop setting goals', stop arguing, ignore people who betray you because, well, people aren't perfect.

It's just disgusting.

All of that aside, the narrator of the CD version even sounds like he's whining through the whole thing.

There are some interesting insights (hence the 2 instead of 1 stars) but on the whole, this is a waste of time.

Don't buy this. Instead go for:

- "The Strangest Secret" by Earl Nightingale (or better yet, listen to it. the man's voice is amazing.)
- "As A Man Thinketh" by James Allen
- "The Richest Man In Babylon" by George S. Classon

Or the granddaddy of them all:

"Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. Yeah the language is a little archaic and at times, hokey. But it's a stellar work.

GRACE LIVINGSTON HILL (1865–1947) is known as the pioneer of Christian romance. Grace wrote over�one hundred faith-inspired books during her lifetime. When her first husband died, leaving her with two daughters to raise, writing became a way to make a living, but she always recognized storytelling as a way to share her faith in God. She has touched countless lives through the years and continues to touch lives today. Her books feature moving stories, delightful characters, and love in its purest form. �Grace Livingston Hill began writing stories in 1877 at the tender age of twelve and didn’t stop until her death in 1947. Love in time for Christmas

Greg Sterling has struggled for years trying to raise cattle on his western land. When oil is discovered on his land, he is instantly rich! He returns east, hoping to see his old friends, and the old home where he lived before his mother died. Instead, he finds his old home is run down, and his friends have grown shallow and selfish.

As Greg looks out of his third floor luxury hotel room contemplating life's sadness, he sees a young woman faint and fall to the ground from her park bench. Greg rushes to help her, and takes her to the hospital. They learn that young Margaret McLaren is a poor penniless girl who has starved herself into exhaustion, trying to earn money to send home to her beloved grandparents who are just about to lose their farm.

Greg is much taken with this young woman, and arranges to pay all of her hospital bills, and to have her hospital room set up as a memorial in honor of his mother, as a free room for poor strangers. When the head nurse learns that a stranger has paid for Margaret's bills, she accuses Margaret of improper behavior. Margaret, still not well, flees the hospital. Margaret has no place to stay, and no money. She manages to find a poor job that first day addressing envelopes, and catnaps in the train station, moving around several times during the night so as not to be caught as a vagrant. She eats soup or coffee, rarely both, and manages to keep going for several more days.

In the meantime, Greg learns what the head nurse has done, and is frantic to find Margaret. He meets a friend who shows him all that Jesus has done for him, and he gives his heart to God. He then determines to set up a small business dedicated to helping people learn of God, and determines that Margaret is just the young woman to work as his secretary -- if he can find her.

Does he find her? And do her impoverished grandparents get to keep their farm?

I really, really enjoyed this book. I prefer GLH books with poor heroines who struggle against the odds, and this is such a story. I wish it had spent more time describing Margaret's days of struggle after leaving the hospital, instead it spent more on Greg's journey to find her. I enjoyed the homelike description of the grandparents' farm, even to the simple meals they ate. The ending was too fairy-tale-like to be believable, but still it was sweet. I have added this book to my permanent collection as one of my favorite GLH books.

Grace Livingston Hill in her new book, "The Christmas Bride" Book Nine in the Love Endures series published by Barbour Publishing, Inc. takes us into the life of Greg Sterling.

From the back cover: "His heart sank more and more over the ghastly thought that perhaps he should never find her again..."

Greg Sterling spent the last ten years out West trying to eke out a living on rough, unforgiving land...until he discovered oil and his fortune was made. With his recently acquired wealth to his name, Greg heads back East hoping to prove his worth among those who once doubted his potential.

But only hours after arriving, Greg sees a young woman collapse on a park bench and rushes to her side. There's no doubt that Margaret McLaren needs someone's help-his help. But just as quickly and unexpectedly as she appeared in his life, Margaret vanishes without a trace. Now Greg will do anything to find her again.

Just as Greg's search comes up empty-handed, old flame Alice Blair sets out to rekindle their relationship. Will it keep Greg from finding his true love?

When Grace Livingston Hill's first husband died he left her with two young daughters to raise. In an effort to support her family she turned to writing. However, Ms. Hill just didn't want to write anything she wanted to write stories of faith. Nothing blows up, there are no car chases and the future of the world is not in jeopardy yet "The Christmas Bride" is very exciting. Originally written in 1934 "The Christmas Bride" is a wonderful story of how God can take our circumstances and change them to the better. Greg Sterling left town because the townspeople thought he was worthless. Now wealthy he has returned to prove them wrong. Then he meets Margaret, who vanishes on him. As he tries to find her his old flame resurfaces. However his only interest is in Margaret. I think "The Christmas Bride" is an exciting story and a wonderful romance that will keep you reading as to what happens next. Ms. Hill knows how to tell a great story and while it may be old it still is a powerful story.

Worth buying, but this is a terrible book. Price was the first in an unfortunately long list of fundamentalist Christians who use pseudoscience, outright lies, and an unsophisticated reading of scripture, to argue for an earth that is less than 7000 years old. My own favorite review of the book comes from Sterling Talmage: "All of Price's arguments, in principle at least, were advanced and refuted from fifty to a hundred years ago. They are not 'New.' His ideas certainly are not 'Geology.' With these two corrections, the title remains the best part of the book."
