Dr. Arvind Singhal (asinghal@utep.edu) is the Samuel Shirley and Edna Holt Marston Endowed Professor of Communication and Director of the Social Justice Initiative in UTEP’s Department of Communication. �He is also appointed, since 2009-2010, as the William J. Clinton Distinguished Fellow at the Clinton School of Public Service, Little Rock, Arkansas. �Singhal teaches and conducts research in the diffusion of innovations, the positive deviance approach, organizing for social change, the entertainment-education strategy, and liberating interactional structures. �His research and outreach spans sectors such as health, education, peace, human rights, poverty alleviation, sustainable development, civic participation, democracy and governance, and corporate citizenship.
Singhal is co-author or editor of 12 books – Health Communication in the 21st Century (2014); Inviting Everyone: Healing Healthcare through Positive Deviance (2010); Protecting Children from Exploitation and Trafficking: Using the Positive Deviance Approach (2009); Popular with a Purpose (2008); Communication of Innovations �(2006); Organizing for Social Change (2006); Entertainment-Education Worldwide: History, Research, and Practice (2004); Combating AIDS: Communication Strategies in Action (2003); The Children of Africa Confront AIDS: From Vulnerability to Possibility (2003);India’s Communication Revolution: From Bullock Carts to Cyber Marts (2001); Entertainment-Education: A Communication Strategy for Social Change (1999); and India's Information Revolution (1989). �Three of Singhal’s books won awards for distinguished applied scholarship. �In addition, he has authored some 170 peer-reviewed essays in outlets such as the Journal of Communication, Communication Theory, Communication Monographs, Health Communication, Management Communication Quarterly; Communication Quarterly, Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Journal of Health Communication, and others.�
Singhal has won Top Paper Awards from the International and National Communication Associations (ICA and NCA) over a dozen times, and Ohio University’s Baker Research Award twice. � The Social Science Research Council & the International Communication Association recognized him as the winner of the Communication Research as Collaborative Practice Award in 2009, and the winner of the Communication Researcher as an Agent of Change Award in 2008. � The NW Communication Association honored him with the 2007 Human Rights Award for Steadfast Commitment to Social Justice, Social Change, and Freedom, and in 2005, USC’s Norman Lear Center honored him with the first Everett M. Rogers Award for Outstanding Contributions to Entertainment-Education.�
Singhal’s recent academic honors and appointments include President-Appointed Visiting Professor, Kumamoto (National) University, Japan (2012-13); Fulbright Hays Scholar, Slovakia (2012); Schomburg Distinguished Scholar, Ramapo College of New Jersey (2011), Commerzbank Foundation Professor, Chemnitz University of Technology, Germany (2009); Berkitt Williams Distinguished Lecturer, Ouachita Baptist University, Arkansas (2009); and Raushni Memorial Deshpande Distinguished Lecturer, Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi, India (2006). ��
Singhal's research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, The Dutch Health Research Council, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, The National Science Foundation, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and others. He has served as an advisor to the World Bank, UN-FAO, UNICEF, UNDP, UNAIDS, UNFPA, U.S. Department of State; U.S. A.I.D., Family Health International, PATH, Save the Children, the BBC World Service Trust, International Rice Research Institute, Voice for Humanity, and private corporations such as Procter & Gamble (U.S.A and Thailand), Telenor AS (Norway), SpareBank (Norway), and others.�
He has taught previously at Ohio University, University of Southern California, University of California- Los Angeles, and held visiting professorships at the USC Annenberg School; the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University; Royal Roads University, Canada; Kumamoto (National) University, Japan; Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany; Institut Teknologi (Malaysia), Bangkok University (Thailand); and visited and lectured in some 70 countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America, Australia, Europe, and North America.

Review of Kabu Kabu

I have been salivating over Kabu Kabu since I first saw Nnedi Okorafor tweeting about it a few months ago. When I saw it was available to review, I pounced and, after reading just the first story, I was not disappointed. I laughed out loud, so loudly in fact the neighboring dogs had to come back with their own version of the raucous sounds I was making.

The title story deals with the kabu kabu which is, from what I understand, a less than um.. legal cab service in Nigeria. I could understand this from some real life, somewhat related experience as I spent some time in Jamaica and the foremost warning given to me was on the taxi cab services. However, I think had the potential for a ride similar to the one in Kabu Kabu been offered, I might just have taken them up on their offer.

The stories in Kabu Kabu are trippy, fun, far-fetched, laugh-out-loud funny, and enlightening. Okorafor's writing is a welcome, fresh distraction from much of the fantasy that I tend to read and a reminder that there are writers out there who focus on other mythologies and traditions - that fantasy does not have to be about some blonde-haired knight who is stuck between a savage and a cliff to jump off of. (Read the book, you'll understand.)

I don't know if Kabu Kabu will get the buzz it deserves. I know that I have given out Okorafor's name more times than I can count to various fantasy lovers. I wish I could force people to read her works - but since I can't, I'll just say here in this public setting that Okorafor is an author to be praised and Kabu Kabu is just another strong notch in her belt of great works.

Nnedi Okorafor's story collection KABU KABU, published in 2013, provides the reader with a fascinating glimpse into the author's rich imagination, vibrant language and captivating scenarios. Created at different stages in her extensive writing career, Okorafor treats us to a range of intriguing characters and their adventures, skilfully (and successfully) combining elements of speculative fiction and fantasy with African folklore and magical realism, and yes, indeed, political and social present day issues. Many of her stories have been nominated, shortlisted and/or have won literary recognition and awards as have her novels.

Born in the US of Nigerian parents, Nnedi Okorafor developed strong ties to her parents' home country since her childhood. Not surprisingly, her stories here are set in Nigeria - the real and the imagined society. In fact, Okorafor is a convincing advocate for an African science fiction kind of storytelling. It opens, among others, new avenues for creating future realities.

Admittedly, I am not usually a great fan of speculative fiction, yet, Okorafor has captured my attention and imagination, from the first story to the last - all twenty one of them. I particular enjoyed the character of Arro-yo, the "windseeker", who appears in several somewhat linked stories. Arro-yo is an outcast in her community because she can capture the wind and fly. Okorafor expands with her stories on African folklore that singled out girls born with "locked hair" and who had special powers. They could bring misery and misfortune to their home and were therefore chased away. Arro-yo's adventures in Okorafor's stories are nonetheless anchored very much in reality, whether she is caught up in civil unrest or fears for her life for other reasons.

The title story, KABU KABU - the name for an unlicensed taxi - sets the reader up for a roller coaster of a ride. The protagonist, a young woman living in Chicago, needs to catch a plane to return to Nigeria for a wedding... a hilarious escapade and a great opening story for the adventures that follow in Africa... humorous at times, serious at others, yet always engaging and thought provoking. It would take too long to introduce other stories... just read them all. Whoopi Goldberg provides a motivating introduction to the book. [Friederike Knabe]

Daring and Different

Okorafor is an author whose work I always feel as if I was missing something. Just not getting that little bit needed to finish the picture as it were. As a reader I was one piece short of a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle.

And pro or con, I always felt somehow the lack was mine. So on the one hand, I felt as if Okorafor was a worthy author, I also felt that as a reader I was losing out whenever I tried her work.

Not in this case. With all the wonderful and not so wonderful webzines out there now, short speculative fiction abounds. And more and more I'm convinced that short fiction done well might be harder to produce than long form novels. Okorafor manages to deliver for me works that actually startled me with views very fresh and a voice that I have not enjoyed anywhere else. Part of it is the immersion in settings and cultures that few if any other authors manage to mix and meld with touch that manages to be deft, wry and silly. All often in the same work.

At the risk of sounding provincial, one of the chief delights is her ability to blend the ties between a nation embraced and the nation of birth still beating strongly in her characters' life blood. All the while delivering fantasy that is firmly rooted in the reality of recognizable life and the sublime wonders of an imagination unleashed.

If you love Okorafor's previous works, you will want to grab and savor this delightful feast of fantasy. If you have never tried her works, this is a great pool to jump into and explore. Be warned though, the quality of many of these short works might leave you aching futilely for greater length and exposition. But that is perhaps the best feeling any written work can leave one with, no?

I really admire Warren Buffett on his success in life. I want to be like him in business. My friend told me about this book and I quickly get it. This book introduces to me the life of Warren Buffett. The book explained to me the value of reputation. I learned that talent is the best defense in chosen field of business. I understand what it is I am investing in. I also learned the art of probability. This information is amazing and most of them are new to me. I really admire Warren Buffett more now.

Warren Buffett once said that "the most important investment you can make is in yourself". This book is a step in the right direction as it helps readers get started on their own paths to financial success. It is well-organized, well-written, and contains a lot of useful advice. My only wish is that it were longer.

A pleasure to read but not for Scale Modellers

The author have put everything in a nutshell. Brief and concise text help readers get some idea of what an airplane and the operation history of the Fishbed is. The load of 3-views at the end of the book is impressive. However, because of its limited size, not much detail on the vast number of varients of the Fishbed family is included. Scale modellers are disappointed because it lacks detail shots nor description of various parts of the varients, nor scale plan in popular scales. I am thinking of the technical drawings of the "old Aerofax" minigraph and datagraph series that have disappear in the "new" Aerofax titles. Finally, if you can afford only one book on the Fishbed, this is not the choice.

Mig-21 Fishbed by Gordon and Gunston =excellent book

Plenty of historical facts that includes information on prototypes and updated versions. The technical specs on each variant are also included as well as color pictures of the variants. It even has a reference section of all the countries that use it and the variants used by their air forces. This is an excellent book for anyone interested in the Mig-21.

The MiG -21 has been produced in greater numbers than any post WW2 fighter plane. It is fast, small, agile and proven to be a nasty surprise to the West, who typically felt the Soviets could not produce good fighters. It began production in 1959, with over 10,000 being built. Some are still in service today.

The Aerofax series of books offer highly glossy paper, quality photos, line drawings, statistics and very, very detailed narrative. It can be dry sometimes. There are 12 pages of color photos, four pages of color plates showing paint patterns used by the Soviets and other nations. I think that modelers would find this a very helpful book for details on each version of the plane as well as color schemes.

Yefim Gordon has penned a lot of books on Soviet Aviation. I have enjoyed all of his books in the Aerofax series. Highly recommended for aviation enthusiasts, historians and those who want to learn more about 1950's/60's/70's jet fighters.

My wife has been going through these recipes like crazy. They're all delicious so far. The only downside is that most of them seem to call for raw eggs and it has taken some mental gymnastics to get used to that idea.

This book is a true gem!

Brett Blumenthal has done it again! "52 Small Changes for the Mind" is truly a gem. If you're looking for an aid to help you jump start change and gradually implement those changes one week at a time, then this is the book for you. I love that the book takes a holistic and integrated approach to helping the reader implement change. It covers the following four areas to help you achieve mental well-being:
-Stress Management
-Concentration and Productivity
-Memory and Anti-aging
-Happiness and Fulfillment
Implementing one change per week is far less daunting than trying to take on multiple changes at once, and this book provides you with the road map and tools to nourish your mind. This time of year the focus is usually on becoming more fit and eating healthier, which are both important; however, it is equally important to nurture the mind, which leads to overall wellness. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to take better care of themselves holistically.

A solid guide for making lasting changes.

Brett takes her years of experience helping inspire and organize the endeavor to live healthier in our bodies, and helps us do the same with our minds. Of course, as Brett well knows, the mind is very much connected to our bodies, and an effort at balancing one, balances the other. I've long admired her ability to take such a broad area and such ambitious goals and make them bite-size, doable, enticing. This isn't just a book of tips--it's an approach to living. I see the criticisms of this book falling into two camps: One is the "it's for beginners, but not me since I'm so advanced," and two, "It's too ambitious and no one could really do this." Wrong, and wrong. You absolutely can follow and adhere to this, and no one is ever "done" doing them. Wellness takes ongoing tweaks and sometimes major overhauls. Anyone who thinks they can't do this or don't need to must look no further than themselves for why they feel stuck elsewhere in their lives. This is about as solid a guide as you'll find to make real changes, and if you do half of them, you'll be better off than where you are now.

Resource for the Novice

Most self-help books are fairly general, particularly when the author is addressing anyone instead of a targeted audience. 52 Small Changes for the Mind by Brett Blumenthal suffers a bit from the one-change-fits-all approach, but still offers plenty of ideas and resources for those looking to make mindful changes in their lives for the first time.

I would not recommend following this book as the weekly guided program it was intended to be. Not all of the changes are small (Be a Guru) and some will be costly (Get Out of Town). While I appreciate many people will like the Get a Rubdown change, those of us who are disabled, suffer from chronic pain or simply not comfortable with being touched by strangers would absolutely not benefit from it. Any changes in regard to diet should be first discussed with your physician before implementation; some may cause problems with certain medications or conditions.

This book is well-written, and has much to offer the mindful-living novice, but it probably should have been formatted as a resource reference versus a program guide. If there is a person out there who can actually make and maintain all these changes in 52 weeks? I bow to you in advance.

Marrin does it again!

Albert Marrin should have stayed in junior high as a teacher. That way maybe we would have a lot more history lovers in America! Since he chose another career path, I am very happy that he continues to write for young people (now more kids can learn to love history!).
As usual, Marrin does an excellent job not only of presenting an memorable character, but explaining the events surrounding his life. I would not recommend this book for younger than at least 7th or 8th grade, but I would recommend it even for adults who want a readable, clear explanation of Old Hickory and his times! Thanks again Mr. Marrin!

What happened, Professor Marrin?

This is the tenth book I have read and purchased written by Professor Marrin. I initially came across him while writing my senior thesis for college and I have been impressed with his writing ever since...until now. Perhaps my disappointment comes from the reality that I have only read his older books, whereas this one was written in 2006; perhaps with time the author has become more "progressive" and revisionist in his writing. Besides the obvious inaccuracies (Marrin writes that the Act of Union between Scotland and England occurred in 1607 when it was 1707. Marrin writes that the 3/5 Clause in the Constitution placed the value of a black person at 3/5 a human being, a typical revisionist idea. Even a superficial knowledge of the Constitution causes one to understand that only 3/5 of blacks were counted as a WHOLE, not as an individual), Marrin also takes "potshots" at whites in general. When he mentions that Jackson had a black female slave, he subtlety attempts to interject that "they may have been sex partners," but then never gives any proof and never even mentions the relationship again. In a former book Professor Marrin wrote, "Struggle for a Continent: The French and Indian Wars, 1690-1760," he describes the brutality of both native people and whites. In this book, all the brutality seems to be on the part of whites, who, Professor Marrin would have you believe, wanted nothing more than to kill every native person in the continent. I will freely admit that I haven't finished reading the book, but I cannot expect that the liberal, revisionist tone of the rest of the book will be any different. I will continue to buy Professor Marrin's books, but only if they precede the printing of this one. I don't read history for fiction; I read it to learn the truth. You will not find it in this book. Certainly, I don't agree with much of what President Jackson did, but he deserves better treatment than this. I truly hope that the author returns to the quality of his previous works with their obvious lack of bias.
