This book is incredibly valuable to me. As I read the book, I felt that it was written just for me. The author keeps it real and, by fully understanding my life's challenges, with her compassion and insights she has made me feel: I can do this. Not only that, but I can choose the stretches I need to address my body s chronic neck pain in a time-efficient manner. The instructions are easy to follow, and I also feel Linda nudging me on in her gentle manner. This book is not like other stretching books that just address the physical aspect of stretching, and that is what attracted me. Linda creates a masterful tapestry by integrating stretching, breathing, and stress reduction with a thread of mindfulness. I love the emphasis on not having to be perfect. Instead, the emphasis shifts toward kindness and patience with my body while I am trying to help it get out of pain and also lower my stress. About the Author
Linda Minarik has been continuously certified in group fitness with the American Council on Exercise since 1993. She also holds teaching certifications in Gyrokinesis� and The MELT Method™. Her other specialties include Aerobic Dance and Water Aerobics. Linda currently teaches group fitness at New York's Health & Racquet Clubs and the Equitable Athletic and Swim Club. Linda pursues the unusual fitness combination of ballet and bodybuilding and is a long-time, serious student of classical dance. She has recently branched out into the study of rhythmic gymnastics. Improve Your Stretching Techniques AND Overall Health

I have always believed that PROPER stretching is so important, for overall health and appearance.
But, as is the case with all types of activities, there IS a right way and a wrong way to stretch.

Stretching with Ease by Linda Minarik is an excellent reference guide for anyone who wants to improve their stretching techniques, no matter what their age or current fitness level.

Color photos throughout and detailed instructions, guide the reader on proper stretching techniques, and for a variety of needs including for the back, preparing for a variety of sports, neck, alleviating issues resulting from prolonged sitting (and don't we all do too much of that!), legs, knees, feet...and much much more.

Definitely worth checking out if you are in need of some professional and (for the most part) easy to follow suggestions for improving your own stretching techniques and regimes.

A beautifully structured book

A beautifully structured book, covering everything from "Why stretch?" to individual stretches to stretching sequences, all the way to developing your own stretching routines, with logical, direct language that seamlessly takes you from one part of the book to the next without confusing or overwhelming. References to other pages or parts of the book that complement the section being read are specific and extremely useful. As someone who has learned about physical movement in dance classes and is always interested in the "doing" of something but not always clear as to the "why," I am thrilled that Linda puts it all together, filling in the "gaps" of my knowledge with words that improve understanding, and ultimately inspire one to pursue the improvement of the physical self. The benefits of stretching are described in Part 1; benefit 2 contained such a beautifully simple and classic example that I knew by page 17 that this book was going to be invaluable to me.

A Fresh Path to Stretching

I am not a lover of exercise books: I find them too technical, the instructions too robotic, and the visual presentation too intimidating. But the book by Linda Minarik is very different – it is indeed a guide to your body: it makes you aware of parts you never knew you had, it makes you feel them, and it helps you to make them serve you better. Her refreshingly original tips in marginal inserts -- under the heading “Enlist your Mind” -- opened for me an entirely new way of getting in touch with my own body, and with muscles I did not know how to move. She also provides color-coded displays that are extremely helpful. Her presentation of stretching (including “bonus stretches”) humanizes the routines, which make one feel not only more limber, but somehow fuller as a person. Fabulous.

Indispensable

As you can see, this is a complex and contentious topic. If you want to get your bearings, there is simply no better introduction to the subject in English, and that's not all good news. It would be silly to expect a small book like this to cover all aspects, let alone all personalities, be they "authentic" or not. This is certainly in the spirit of the great musicologists like D'Erlanger, who wanted to save Arabic music from itself, and in opposition to the inferiority complex that created the bizarre "arabic orchestra", in which legions of musicians play a single melodic line on as many western instruments as could be dragged onto the stage. It also sheds some light on why attempts to create pieces like symphonic "oud concertos" might sound silly and contrived.

At the same time, there is a touch of madness and bias to such polemics. Imagine a little book called "Music of the Europeans", and you get a taste of the problems. Touma also forgets that Western Art Music is in crisis. The old orderly image of "classical music" is failing because we are finding that there is no viable "contemporary classical music". Mozart and Beethoven were products of their economic/social context, and those norms no longer work. If you want to talk about the music we listen to, you have to include John Lennon, Andrew Lloyd Webber ... AND Farid El AlTrash.

Having relied on rote oral transmission from master to student, especially defenseless against distortions for having no system of notation of its own, Arabic music has been constantly evolving (or decaying) over the centuries, and changing under the influence of foreigners. At one point Touma makes the following tragic admission: "Most Arabs today, however, whatever their level of education might be, no longer know true Arabic music." The sad thing is that the author of this book is no exception. It's as good as it gets, yet it is full of errors that reveal more than a translation (from German) problem. The reference to "Early Persian Magicians" to denote Zoroastrians in the first chapter is symptomatic. Touma then incomprehensibly uses the term "Maqam", which is a mode, a scale or tone row, to denote a Taqsim, which is an is improvisation form that USES a Maqam. The material covered is wide, and nobody will spot all the errors, but it happens that I can also see that the very important Ajam Maqam is notated incorrectly. The criticism that some reviewers level, that it arbitrarily ignores some important figures in 20th century Arabic music, is also not without basis. Farid El Altrash was not just a crooner, he did more to restore interest in the classical Taqsim and the essential Oud (lute) than anyone "modern" before him. Still, books such as this, that aim to return to historical foundations, are invaluable. The controversy (and the errors?) make the field all the more interesting. The exposition of the Maqam phenomenon, the specific Arabic mode/scale system with ties to the "modes" of ancient Greece, is cursory but tries to be complete. You should be acquainted with this stuff if you have any interest in music as a general human phenomenon. It's wonderful that the current interest in "world music" can support efforts such as this. The technical level of the analysis gets quite deep, and the layman may wish to skip some passages. The interested reader can start here, then listen to a wealth of examples on youtube under Oud and Taqsim, and the professional can further study a detailed presentation of the Maqam system on sites like maqamworldDOTcom.

Armed with the not inconsiderable body of knowledge in this volume as a start, you can be better prepared to join the fray and meaningfully argue whether Farid El Altrash was a tacky movie musical actor with a fast wrist, or a genius imbued with the tradition of centuries, and whether other Oud players like Nasseer Shamma are brave innovators, or if they should stop equivocating and just play the guitar. You can also ponder whether Munir Bashir, who left Iraq to practice a more authentic Arabic music, was right on track, or just spinning a self-serving tale.

The CD is of course arbitrary in its selections, but a very welcome bonus, especially for readers new to the subject, and for whom no amount of reading can substitute for hearing "what it sounds like". The long Bashir selection is a great illustration of the aforementioned Taqsim genre that is central to traditional Arabic Art Music. The book-CD package is a fine value, printed on thick paper that is rarely found in paperbacks, and if you have any interest in Arabic music, this is the one to start with. You will keep coming back to it for reference, and, as your knowledge deepens, to quibble and rage ;-)

An excellent book

Thanks God that the book doesn't mention Farid or Abdel Wahab, because Arabic music did exist before them, or before they changed it into Casino-like belly dancing arabesque musique rather than a decent creative music that didn't need their foreign and stupid influences such as Rumba and Tango, things that were cut and paste from the hollywood of the twenties, and that are so out of date now.

This book focuses on the Arabic music as a traditional inherited music, and does an excellent job at describing it.

Phase II copywriting.

If you are interested in learning copywriting, I would only say do one thing before reading this book; read it only AFTER you have read something else to get you started. Either Bowerman's "Well-fed Writer", Bly's "Secrets of a Freelance Writer" Slaunwhite's "Start and Run a Copywriting Business" or Meanwell's "The Wealthy Writer." Any one of these books will give you a solid foundation to build upon.

THE ADWEEK COPYWRITING BOOK by Joe Sugarman is a "must read". I believe, however, you will gain more value from this incredible book if you use this as somewhat of a "second phase" of your copywriting education. That's not to say Sugarman's book is difficult to understand. It's not. There are just some other things you need to learn and understand first.

This book is brilliantly laid out in a step-by-step, easy to follow format with wide margins for lots of notes. Sugarman takes you through the process of actually writing copy from beginning to end. The emphasis here is on print advertising, but the relation and application to any other form of copywriting is easily discernable. The brief final section of the book even covers writing for other types of media.

Sugarman is a great teacher. This book pulls largely from the training seminar Sugarman taught for many years. Only you get the $2,000 seminar for the price of a book. What a deal!

This is a great book to have on the bookshelf if you're a writer. Although this focuses on copywriting, the structure and patterns of writing discussed here are valuable for any writer in any industry. In this book you'll learn the process of writing and you'll have a way to rate your writing.
