Dragons--fiction or fact?

Some time back a library student asked me for a book about dragons. As our library did not have any, I found one with illustrations by a prominent children's artist. However, when it came in, I was aghast. Too much sexual reference for upper elementary students! While I don't practice censorship, I do try to exhibit good sense.

So imagine my delight when our book fair company brought this book in for our last fair. "Dragons: Fearsome Monsters for Myth and Fiction" is exactly what I was seeking for this boy. He was thrilled with the book.

There are several reasons why this is a good dragon book:
1. The reading level is appropriate for the 9-12 age grouping.
2. Each two-page spread of each dragon contains
*a full-page illustration,
*a comparative illustration with man to show size,
*a map of country of origin and story,
*an illustration depicting one scene of the dragon in action, and
*a list of factoids.

The introduction points out that dragons may be entirely mythical based on mistaken identity (discovery of dinosaur bones could have led to speculation about dragons). However, there have been credible witnesses to dragons: Marco Polo during his travels and Leonardo da Vinci drew them.

Whatever the case--myth, fiction, or reality--the dragons in this book have captured the imagination. Some of the dragons included are Beowulf's dragon, Krak of Poland (Krakow is named after him), the dragon from the St. George story, the story of Maud and the Wyvern in England, Fafnir of Scandinavian fame immortalized in Wagner's opera "Siegfried," both Glaurung and Smaug of Lord of the Rings.

Also included are dragons from Pakistan, China, Russia, Japan, Canary Islands, Libya, as well as fictional stories.

Even though Amazon lists several other dragon books, I cannot speak for them. I can speak for this book. It is appropriate, interesting, informative, and entertaining. The only reason I am deducting one star is that it is out of print. And I don't know why. It doesn't make sense.

It's a good book with lots of great artwork and includes awesome action pictures and facts about different dragons from ancient legends, myths, and media dragons. It has many dragons (20 in count) all with information boxes and Did you know facts. It has dragons like the Hungarian Horntail, the Wyvern, and Jawzahr.

Soulstepping: African American Step Shows by Elizabeth C. Fine (Associate Professor in the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and Director of the Humanities Program, Virginia Tech) is an informed and informative introduction to a complex and unique form of performance that blends dance, percussion, chanting, drama, initially developed by African-American fraternities and sororities, and has evolved to now being practiced and performed worldwide. The history, culture, politics, and art of this African-American performance artform is examined in-depth; with black-and-white photographs embellish this impressively, scholarly, highly recommended contribution to Black American cultural studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

This book is one of a kind.

I enjoyed this book because it took me back in history to the roots of stepping. It connected me to my African and African-American Ancestors. It helped me relive my soul-stepping days as a Delta in Lambda Chapter in Chicago. Stepping is a tradition that has been passed on from generation to generation. Sororities and fraternities are known for their particular steps. Now, non-Greeks are stepping too. It is great to see how stepping has evolved and this book has captured the traditions of stepping. The first copy I bought was for me. The next book will be for my daughter in college so that she can have her own copy. Hats off to the author!

An imprisoned mind set free

"The Miracle Worker," a play by William Gibson, has had an enduring presence as a piece of living literature. It appeared on Broadway during the 1959-60 dramatic season, was made into a motion picture a couple of years later, and then was remade as a television movie for the 1979-80 season. The play's genesis lies in the real story of Helen Keller (1880-1968), the woman who was struck deaf and blind by illness at the age of 19 months. "The Miracle Worker" tells how a young Helen was led out of her prison of silence and darkness by the remarkable Anne Sullivan, who set out to teach the girl sign language.
"The Miracle Worker" is a truly great play. Gibson brilliantly takes the historical facts of Keller's childhood (many of which can be found in "The Story of My Life," Keller's 1902 autobiography) and turns them into a suspenseful, profoundly moving piece of theater. Although the core of the play is the fiery relationship between Sullivan and the wildly undisciplined Helen, Gibson's drama takes in the entire Keller household. I was particularly moved by the relationship between "Miss Annie" and Helen's frustrated but devoted mother.
"The Miracle Worker" is remarkable because much of the story is told not in dialogue, but in Gibson's stage directions. This is one of those plays which is not only powerful in performance, but also a gripping read.
Gibson's play is one of those great examples of a drama that takes real American life stories and turns them into enduring art; in that sense, it is comparable to such great works as "The Crucible," by Arthur Miller, or "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail," by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee.
"The Miracle Worker" is not only a compelling human drama, but also a reflection on courage, love, education, and the transcendent power of language. As an interesting complementary text, I recommend Octavia Butler's science fiction story "Speech Sounds" (which can be found in Butler's book "Bloodchild and Other Stories").

The miracle worker

I chose this book "The miracle worker" because I knew it was going to be about the adventure of Helen Keller and the way she learned to communicate with her hands because she was blind and deaf. My feelings about the story after I read it was that nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything. Yes, this book was what I thought it would be. I felt the same way about the book after I read it. My feelings didn't change because it turned out the way that I expected.

This story is about a teacher who had one of the same problems as the child she was teaching so she knew what her student was going through. The teacher and the child become the worst of enemies but then realize how much they really care about each other. They go through rough times but at the end everything falls into place. It is a true story of Helen Keller and Annie. The parents go through a difficult time watching the teacher, Annie, teach Helen as if she were a regular child. They think that the teacher is not a very good teacher. In the beginning, they want Annie to leave but later on they see that Annie is going to be the one who gets through to Helen.

Two reasons why I like this book is because it shows that anything is possible if you try hard enough and that you can get through to the most stubborn person in the world.

I think that this book is for the age of twelve years old and up. I chose twelve years old and up because you need to be able to understand what you're reading. Twelve year olds also have a good variety of vocabulary. So I suggest that you read this book because it will give you a great feeling inside!

I would give this book a five out of five rating because it is a very good book!!!

This book is about a girl who finds herself with the help of a teacher, everyone should read this book and I promise you that you will not waste your time!!!

Ordered Used - very good condition and that's what I got. No issues with vendor.
That being said: what a rip off. Regardless of type, new or used or condition, these things are going for $160+ and they are a sad case. It's soft cover for starters. For a $160+ textbook, one expects a hard bound book. Heck, my $80 Statistics book was hardbound. This thing is the softest of the soft cover books I've purchased for college. It's built like a $12.99 bargain bin book at the local bookseller. Handle with care because this thing will wear badly. If hardbound was too much to ask for, a heavier grade of card stock is in order considering the life that textbooks lead. The paper used for the pages is that thin but seemingly durable paper we have all come to expect in a modern textbook. I'm sure the content will be fine. It's simply that this book is poor value for money.

Design with composite materials is often conducted in a two-step process: "preliminary design" and "detailed analysis". The former is covered by "Introduction to Composite Materials Design-2nd edition" and the free online software cadec-online.com is helpful for that as well. In large aerospace companies, once preliminary design is done, the project is handed over to the "detailed analysis" team, but most often than not the whole process is done by the same person or same team. Detailed analysis is covered by my twin boons: "Finite Element Analysis of Composites Materials" Using Abaqus and Using ANSYS, both 2nd Edition. These books cover all "mechanics" aspects of the design including deformation and strength. Other topics might be relevant depending on the application are covered in "Multifunctional Composites".

About the Author

Ever J. Barbero holds a BSME-BSEE from Universidad Nacional de R�o Cuarto, Argentina and a Ph.D from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, USA. He is ASME and SAMPE fellow, a professor at West Virginia University, Morgantown, USA, and honorary professor at Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, Peru. Holder of two US patents, author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications, and recipient of numerous teaching and research awards, he is recognized internationally for his work on material models for composite materials.

This book is a wonderful option to get inside the world of composite materials by FEA. It is quite useful to graduate students and also to advanced undergraduate students. I think that prof. Barbero's book is unique in the topic because it includes also theoretical contents that are necessary to refresh when one has to model composites structures in a FE platform.

This is an excellent book!
This book covers not only practical examples, but theoretical explanation and implementation of computational algorithms that Nowadays are very useful in composite materials... Code Explanation make it useful for the implementation not only in Ansys, but only into your own FEM code (e.g. Matlab, C++, Fortran) or in any commercial FEM code with scripting capabilities . To my knowledge, till today, this is the only book that takes care of composite materials with strong focus on computational implementation of modern methods. PhD student, Uppsala University.
