A brief but useful look at photographic technique

While the book was shorter than I expected it did provide some useful tips for taking sharper photos. Some things are so obvious but you just don't make the connection until you see them in print. Shutter speed for instance, I've always kept in mind that the minimum shutter speed for hand held photos really should be 1/40 or so but I didn't connect this with fuzziness in pictures of my 4 year old daughter until this book suggested a minimum shutter speed of 1/100 to freeze her quick jittery movements. Back button focus was a completely new idea to me that seems like a good practice as well.

I would have liked this book to go over the basics of fine tuning the autofocus of your lenses which I came across after finishing this book. Also note that this book is written for users of Canon DSLRs so it does take a little effort to translate if you shoot Nikon.

Not Worth the $10

I was hopeful for this book to improve my photography. Unfortunately, this book seemed more like a collection of short blog posts that were unhelpful to me as an intermediate photographer. The information I read in this book was at a very beginner level. It may be good for someone starting out, but all the information contained is common knowledge that can be gained by reading reputable photography blogs.

It would have been more helpful to see more photo examples of the techniques James shared ie: here is a photo using back button focus, here is one without; here is a photo using AF-C, AF-S, etc

I would have been willing to pay $3-5 for this book. The length and information contained was not worth the $10 paid.

Tack sharp for beginners

This is a book about the very basics of setting your camera. Very little of use that is not known by any one who even scans their owners manual. You can get better information off any web site on sharp pictures. Only Half of the pages contain any information and the pages are very brief. Overall a book for beginners.

I have been using some of his tools and techniques and they are going well so far. My clients love the 'Favourite Things' activity and 'The Pencil' activity. It is a holistic approach which works well with my young clients.

About the Author
Dr. Keith Folse is a Professor of TESOL at the University of Central Florida. He is the author of 57 textbooks on a variety of subjects from grammar to vocabulary to composition, including five best-selling books in the Great Writing series by National Geographic Learning. Elena Vestri Solomon is currently a lecturer in the B. Ed program for future teachers in Abu Dhabi's Emirates College for Advanced Education. She received her MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of South Florida, Tampa, and has lived and worked in Italy, Spain, France, Hungary, Romania, Uzbekistan, and UAE. She has authored/co-authored over a dozen academic textbooks in composition, grammar, and listening/speaking/note-taking. April Muchmore-Vokoun is a faculty member in the English for Academic Purposes Department at Hillsborough Community College (HCC) in Tampa, Florida. She has taught in intensive English, college-level, and worksite study ESL programs. Her current academic interests include reading and writing skills as well as listening-speaking strategies. Additionally, she has had extensive experience in the areas of international student advising and event programming.

Best English writing book that I have ever read.

The best ever writing text that I have ever read . It is very difficult to find a grammar book which explain the English writing process in a logical step by step way, specially for non native speakers like us . This book buildup the writing process which is very useful for academics in developing countries, who are heading to higher education in English speaking countries like U.K or Australia.

Great first book for the series

This book is terrific, however it is much too easy for my children. I thought I would be able to use it for my sixth grader but this is definitely for an elementary school aged child. The book is organized well and would be a great resource for an elementary school teacher or homeschooler.
