My wife has been going through these recipes like crazy. They're all delicious so far. The only downside is that most of them seem to call for raw eggs and it has taken some mental gymnastics to get used to that idea.

This book is a true gem!

Brett Blumenthal has done it again! "52 Small Changes for the Mind" is truly a gem. If you're looking for an aid to help you jump start change and gradually implement those changes one week at a time, then this is the book for you. I love that the book takes a holistic and integrated approach to helping the reader implement change. It covers the following four areas to help you achieve mental well-being:
-Stress Management
-Concentration and Productivity
-Memory and Anti-aging
-Happiness and Fulfillment
Implementing one change per week is far less daunting than trying to take on multiple changes at once, and this book provides you with the road map and tools to nourish your mind. This time of year the focus is usually on becoming more fit and eating healthier, which are both important; however, it is equally important to nurture the mind, which leads to overall wellness. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to take better care of themselves holistically.

A solid guide for making lasting changes.

Brett takes her years of experience helping inspire and organize the endeavor to live healthier in our bodies, and helps us do the same with our minds. Of course, as Brett well knows, the mind is very much connected to our bodies, and an effort at balancing one, balances the other. I've long admired her ability to take such a broad area and such ambitious goals and make them bite-size, doable, enticing. This isn't just a book of tips--it's an approach to living. I see the criticisms of this book falling into two camps: One is the "it's for beginners, but not me since I'm so advanced," and two, "It's too ambitious and no one could really do this." Wrong, and wrong. You absolutely can follow and adhere to this, and no one is ever "done" doing them. Wellness takes ongoing tweaks and sometimes major overhauls. Anyone who thinks they can't do this or don't need to must look no further than themselves for why they feel stuck elsewhere in their lives. This is about as solid a guide as you'll find to make real changes, and if you do half of them, you'll be better off than where you are now.

Resource for the Novice

Most self-help books are fairly general, particularly when the author is addressing anyone instead of a targeted audience. 52 Small Changes for the Mind by Brett Blumenthal suffers a bit from the one-change-fits-all approach, but still offers plenty of ideas and resources for those looking to make mindful changes in their lives for the first time.

I would not recommend following this book as the weekly guided program it was intended to be. Not all of the changes are small (Be a Guru) and some will be costly (Get Out of Town). While I appreciate many people will like the Get a Rubdown change, those of us who are disabled, suffer from chronic pain or simply not comfortable with being touched by strangers would absolutely not benefit from it. Any changes in regard to diet should be first discussed with your physician before implementation; some may cause problems with certain medications or conditions.

This book is well-written, and has much to offer the mindful-living novice, but it probably should have been formatted as a resource reference versus a program guide. If there is a person out there who can actually make and maintain all these changes in 52 weeks? I bow to you in advance.

Marrin does it again!

Albert Marrin should have stayed in junior high as a teacher. That way maybe we would have a lot more history lovers in America! Since he chose another career path, I am very happy that he continues to write for young people (now more kids can learn to love history!).
As usual, Marrin does an excellent job not only of presenting an memorable character, but explaining the events surrounding his life. I would not recommend this book for younger than at least 7th or 8th grade, but I would recommend it even for adults who want a readable, clear explanation of Old Hickory and his times! Thanks again Mr. Marrin!

What happened, Professor Marrin?

This is the tenth book I have read and purchased written by Professor Marrin. I initially came across him while writing my senior thesis for college and I have been impressed with his writing ever since...until now. Perhaps my disappointment comes from the reality that I have only read his older books, whereas this one was written in 2006; perhaps with time the author has become more "progressive" and revisionist in his writing. Besides the obvious inaccuracies (Marrin writes that the Act of Union between Scotland and England occurred in 1607 when it was 1707. Marrin writes that the 3/5 Clause in the Constitution placed the value of a black person at 3/5 a human being, a typical revisionist idea. In a former book Professor Marrin wrote, "Struggle for a Continent: The French and Indian Wars, 1690-1760," he describes the brutality of both native people and whites. In this book, all the brutality seems to be on the part of whites, who, Professor Marrin would have you believe, wanted nothing more than to kill every native person in the continent. I will freely admit that I haven't finished reading the book, but I cannot expect that the liberal, revisionist tone of the rest of the book will be any different. I will continue to buy Professor Marrin's books, but only if they precede the printing of this one. I don't read history for fiction; I read it to learn the truth. You will not find it in this book. Certainly, I don't agree with much of what President Jackson did, but he deserves better treatment than this. I truly hope that the author returns to the quality of his previous works with their obvious lack of bias.

A pimp associate of mine, Little Bear, came from a distinguished line of pimps. His daddy was one of the biggest pimps in Milwaukee when I was growing up. Pimpin' was in Little Bear, not on him. Years ago, Little Bear was running an after-hours joint. Many pimps had these little clubs back in the day as a way of catching hoes. A bunch of us were in his joint when one of the finest hoes I ever saw walked in. She had a body like an hourglass. She was so fine her mama should have had triplets. She was just a gorgeous ho. The scene was live, but when this ho walked in, the place stopped.

Sammy, a half-ass pimp who was sitting in the corner blurted out, "That bitch so fine, she don't need no choosing fee to fuck with my pimpin'!"

Out of nowhere Little Bear jumped up and said, "Bitch, break yourself!"

She walks up to Little Bear and asks, "Mr. Bear, what can you do with this money that I can't do with it myself? If you can answer that, I will break myself."

"Bitch, I'm the pimp and you're the ho," he said. "So act like the quarterback and pass the motherfucking bankroll."

She smiled and gave him the trap money. Little Bear then turned to me. "That's a fine-ass bitch," he said. "As soon as she makes me twenty Gs, I'm going to have some buck-naked fun with her." Then he posed the same question he'd been asked to me. "Pimpin', what could you do with that money?"

I stood up, because I was about to perform, and I wanted everyone to hear. "For the record," I started, "I mean to say, for the album -- because the record is too short -- if any of you suckers want to know what a pimp can do with that money that a bitch can't, go to the motherfucking hardware store, get you some duct tape, tape that money on the wall, and piss on it. That's what a pimp can do that a bitch can't!"

The Ism

"Purse first, ass last" is the motto of pimpin', the very foundation on which pimpin' is built. What separates a pimp from a trick is that a pimp completely flips the game. A trick pays a ho for the pussy, but a ho doesn't get to fuck a pimp until she pays him. A ho has got to put it in a pimp's pocket like a rocket before pimpin' can begin. It's not about a pimp breaking a ho, it's about a ho breaking herself. Violating this first law will guarantee a pimp a career of troubles and stress. If a woman can try you before she buy you, then, as B.B. King says, "The thrill is gone."

In life what is expensive seems valuable, and what's available for free seems worthless. You've heard that no one buys the cow when the milk is free, but what they didn't tell you is that after a while, no one even wants that free milk. To be valued, the key is not to give, but to receive -- the more, the better. You don't want to "earn" your price, you want to "cost" it. This is the psychology behind the whole game: anything worth having, you must pay for up front.

Run of the mill read

This book was not very compelling. If you're already familiar with pimp culture than you won't soak up any new game from this book nor will you find this book captivating. I've met Pimpin Ken in real life, and he's a cool dude with a whole lot of game. However, he doesn't do a good job of making that game jump off the pages the way other notable authors have done, who wrote about their pimpin exploits. I expected more from Pimpin Ken, instead of what is largely lackluster read. The only way I can see anyone learning something from this book is If he or she doesn't don't know NOTHING about pimping at all.

Wow... I'll never recover the time I wasted reading this book :(

I only read this as a favor begged from a friend. Perhaps I'm too good of a friend for saying yes. This book would be half the length if you took out the cusswords and insults thrown at the people in his stories.

This book obviously promotes prostitution but it also promotes violence and dishonesty. His stories are one-dimensional and almost always in his favor, making him sound less wise and more like a braggart. One of his own laws states that you keep your wisdom and knowledge to yourself-- and here he is writing a book sharing his knowledge.

If you want to learn about the laws of the game, there are several other books out there that will give you greater and deeper insight-- and at a much higher quality of language and deliverance.

I can't believe this book has all positive ratings...except mine!

I just finished reading Wheelbarrow Profits. The 150 page book was easy to read but contained little to no information that hasn't been published in just about every "Real Estate " book on the market. How on earth did it get all of the good reviews that I see posted? The information isn't wrong, but there is nothing new here to learn. The book lists a couple of good ideas and then repeats them throughout the book. Here is the book in a nutshell...1.Buy the property. 2.Change the name of the building and put the new name on a sign. 3. Fix everything and clean it up. 4. Manage the building yourself (to save money). 5. Raise the rents. 6. Refinance the property and use the money for other projects. There, I just saved you the $19.00 for the book! This book and all of the its four star ratings and "International Best Seller" status is nothing more than promotional HYPE! I don't mean to downgrade this book, but it is a very small book with very little useful information. You can go to just about any real estateinvesting oriented web site and get more information for free. I am a real estate investor and am always looking to learn something by reading everything I can on how to succeed in this business. If you have read any books on real estate investing, than there is no need to spend money on this book.

Great reference tool

This is an excellent description of the right way to purchase and manage multi-family housing. That said, it is really more of a reference book than a "sit down and read" book, but I did just that. While I have rental property I do not have multi-family property. However, many of the issues discussed still apply, and piqued my interest into possibly going the multi-family rental route. I thought the encouraging part of the book was that it describes how you can share some of the potential grief, which will come from rental ownership, with others and especially experts. This was very hopeful. Along with this I was impressed with the obvious commitment expressed in the book to being a "good" landlord providing value and safety to tenants - and how you can make good returns doing so! The book provides a solid systematic approach to a seemingly worrisome issue. I recommend it to any current rental owners and to those who are considering such an investment.
