A new selection and translation of the work of Osip Mandelstam, perhaps the most important Russian poet of the twentieth century

Political nonconformist Osip Mandelstam's opposition to Stalin's totalitarian government made him a target of the communist state. The public recitation of his 1933 poem known in English as "The Stalin Epigram" led to his arrest, exile, and eventual imprisonment in a Siberian transit camp, where he died, presumably in 1938. Mandelstam's work—much of it written under extreme duress—is an extraordinary testament to the enduring power of art in the face of oppression and terror.

Stolen Air spans Mandelstam's entire poetic career, from his early highly formal poems in which he reacted against Russian Symbolism to the poems of anguish and defiant abundance written in exile, when Mandelstam became a truly great poet. Aside from the famous early poems, which have a sharp new vitality in Wiman's versions, Stolen Air includes large selections from The Moscow Notebooks and The Voronezh Notebooks.

Going beyond previous translators who did not try to reproduce Mandelstam's music, Christian Wiman has captured in English—for the first time—something of Mandelstam's enticing, turbulent, and utterly heartbreaking sounds.

About the Author

Christian Wiman was born and raised in West Texas. He is the editor of Poetry and the author of three collections of poems, Every Riven Thing, Hard Night, and The Long Home, and one collection of prose, Ambition and Survival: Becoming a Poet.

Osip Mandelstam (1891-1938) was born and raised in St. Petersburg. Along with Anna Akhmatova and Nicholas Gumilev, Mandelstam formed the Acmeist group, which advocated an aesthetic of exact description and chiseled form, as suggested by the title of Mandelstam's first book, Stone (1913). He settled in Moscow in 1922, where his second collection of poems, Tristia, appeared. In 1934 Mandelstam was arrested and sent into exile. He wrote furiously during these years, and his wife, Nadezhda, and friends memorized his work in an effort to preserve it in case it was destroyed or lost. (Her memoirs, Hope Against Hope and Hope Abandoned, later helped to bring Mandelstam a worldwide audience.) He died on December 27, 1938, in the Gulag Archipelago.

Mandelstam's glorious poetry

Mandelstam is one of the greatest poets of the 20th century and, unfortunately, little known by general readers in the US. Among the virtues of this book is Ilya Kaminsky's introduction, which is not only informative, but lyrical and poetic itself. As other reviewers have noted, Wiman's poetry captures (I trust, not reading Russian) a muscular musical sound to Mandelstam's poetry that is lacking in other translations. I appreciate, for example, Wiman's assertive use of alliteration, assonance, and internal and slant rhyme. Some of the poems virtually punch one from the page. Among my favorites are "Bring Me To The Brink" ("The pain that sings in me does not sing, and is true") ; "Leningrad"; "Gown of Iron"; Faith ("Mother of maple, mother of snow"); "To Natasha Schtempel" ("Because the soul of brokenness is the soul") and the sublime poem "The Necklace." In the latter case, though, I find the translation by W.S. Merwin and Clarence Brown more forthright and simpler, in a positve way. Compare these two translations:

"Love, what's left for us, and of us, is this
Living remnant, loving revenant, brief kiss
Like a bee flying completed hiveless" (Wiman)

"For us, all that's left is kisses
tattered as the little bees
that die when they leave the hive" (Merwin)

Of course, this is purely subjective, but I find Merwin's translation, without the verbal tricks, more effective in capturing the melancholy sense of ending, with the bittersweet solace of love, than Wiman's.

Occasionally, Wiman's translations of Mandelstam (and Wiman is very upfront and honest that these are ultimately his poems, not Mandelstam's, because of the nature of translation) read too contemporary to me, too much like Wiman's own poetry or the poetry of Franz Wright.

Nevertheless, this is certainly a book that contemporary poets and readers of poetry should own.

With the best, and beyond

I have been reading the poems of Osip Mandelstam in translation since I first encountered him through Nadezhda Mandelstam's magnificent memoir, Hope Against Hope, in 1970. Many very fine poets have produced fine versions in English of the poems and prose of the most amazing Russian poet of modern times--one is tempted to say, certainly one of the most amazing poets, period. W.S. Merwin and Clarence Brown, James Green, Sidney Monas, Bernard Meares, and others have helped make him available to those of us with limited or no Russian.

Now we have Christian Wiman and Ilya Kaminsky's magnificent Stolen Air: Selected Poems of Osip Mandelstam. I do not mean in any way to denigrate the achievements of the other poets and translators, but only to say that Wiman and Kaminsky have created a truly great book, a work of power and poetry that brings Mandelstam to us (that in itself is a great achievement), offering him to us in the form of English poems that stand with the best of modern poetry--not just of translations (of which we are privileged in our time to have many that achieve greatness as translation--from Daniel Mendelsohn, John Ashbery, Richard Howard, to name only a few) but great poetry. For anyone who values Mandelstam, for anyone who cares at all about poetry, Wiman's volume is essential. Read it however you can, buy it if you can. You will treasure it.

Captures the music of Mandelstam brilliantly!

Wiman has captured Mandelstam's voice and music brilliantly in his marvelously evocative translations of the works of one of the most challenging and important Russian poets. The collection spans the entirety of Mandelstam's career and includes many works not elsewhere translated.

Not what I expected but what I needed.

Husband and I had been struggling with sleep since our baby was 4 months old. We started to sleep train and it was a disaster. Prior to that baby had always bed shared with us (after spending 3-4 months in a co-sleeper) so it was extremely hard trying to put him in a dark room all by himself. It just did not work. Our son cried for days on end and I really regret doing that.
My husband found this book and bought it. I'd also seen it but wasn't impressed with reviews. Anyway, I started reading through it and became greatly encouraged by the authors assessments and advice regarding sleep around my baby's age (10 months at the time). I felt validated in my bed sharing philosophy and also felt like it helped to normalize what we were going through. A lot of websites that want you to buy (literally) into sleep training will pathologize your child's sleep when it isn't pathological! Sure enough, after employing some gentle sleep recommendations from this book, and trusting our mama/papa instincts, we saw results. For us, it was key to cut the night nursing as it was getting out of hand (3-4 times a night at 10 months!). I mean, I wanted to be one of these breastfeeding all night and day mamas but I couldn't function at my new job on the sleep I was getting. Anyway if you need some encouragement and some gentle suggestions then this book is for you. After reading I felt like I knew what to do the whole time and I was now able to listen to those instincts more effectively.

Surprised at my results!

I bought this book at a moment of desperation. My baby has always been a bad sleeper, and was going from bad to worse. At 20 weeks, he was going to sleep late, waking every 45 minutes, and up for AT LEAST an hour around 2 every single night. Everyone kept telling me to just let him "cry it out," but I just knew in my gut that this wasn't the right approach for him, or for me. She recommends doing "sleep logs" periodically to track your progress, and I think mine speak for themselves:

Night one

4:55-I quit keeping track here, I was too tired to fathom the concept of numbers! :) If I remember correctly, he was up and down until about 6:30, then finally slept until about 9

Night 15
Asleep in his crib at 9:30
Awake from
10:58-11:05
5:30-5:45 (he wasn't asleep when I laid him down, but I was tired. I heard him playing in his crib for about half an hour, when I checked on him at 6:30 he was back asleep)
Up for the day at 9

After the first week he was consistently going to sleep by 9:30, and his sleep stretched from 45 minutes at a time to about 2 hours. After 2 weeks, we were down to about 4 wakings a night, no more long stretches of wanting to "play" in the middle of the night, and I could usually get him back to sleep in a matter of minutes. Its been almost 3 weeks now, and for the last couple of nights I have been able to lay him down as he starts to doze and he falls asleep on his own. He also falls asleep on his own in his crib for naps. If he does wake up during the night (other than to nurse) I don't even have to take him out of his bed to get him back to sleep, I can just help him re-position and give him his "lovey" and he is back asleep in a matter of minutes. We are between 2-3 wakings per night, occasionally 4, but even this is SO MUCH BETTER than where we were! He also takes regular, predictable naps during the day now. And he NEVER EVER EVER had to cry!

She is very open to all kinds of parenting; nursing, bottle fed, crib-sleeping, and co-sleeping. She gives TONS of advice, and encourages you to use what will work for YOU since all babies are so different! We only made minor changes and saw huge results. Now that I am not so sleep-deprived I plan to read it again and add a few more changes to hopefully eliminate the extra wakings we are seeing sometimes, and hopefully get him down to one feeding a night instead of two.

My baby is STUBBORN, strong willed, and very vocal. I was skeptical that I would see results with this, but I am so happy I tried it! It does take some persistence and a little time, but it's well worth it.

Cry it out was not an option for us

I'm a child psychologist / mommy. I have a two year old girl who sleeps 11-12 hours at night and takes a consistent 2 hour nap. It wasn't always easy. We started out with a very colicky newborn with severe GERD. But slowly, and with a lot of patience, and without pressure to do things a certain prescribed way, we have a beautiful sleeper. I give Elizabeth Pantley a great deal of credit for that.

Cry it out was never an option for us. It felt so wrong. And given what I know about attachment theory, and how important early parent responsiveness is to the development of every child, there was no way I was going to let her cry. We started by just responding attentively when she cried. We let her tell us what she needed. I kept a log, and watched for patterns. She originally slept in a cosleeper bassinet next to me. But that didn't work best for her. She preferred her crib in her own room. That's one thing I really appreciated about your suggestions. I like Dr. Sears and his theories, but some of them just didn't work for our family or our daughter. I liked that your book seemed to be a happy medium, and so child-led, but with an emphasis on soothing routines and structure.

The structure and routine is really the #1 thing I took away from this book. We have kept a small, familiar bedtime routine for our daughter since she was an infant. We do teeth brushing, bathtime, pajamas, say goodnight to all her favorite things in her room, sing two songs, I say goodnight and leave. She goes to sleep easily and on her own every night that way.

I have not yet purchased the book about discipline, but I am sure I will soon. My daughter turns 2 in two weeks and we are just beginning to see the tantrums and willfulness I knew would come. I imagine the no cry discipline book will also be relationship based and child friendly as your sleep book was. I look forward to reading it.

I recommend the no cry Sleep book to clients all the time. Many of the other family therapists I work with use this book for their own babies and also recommend it to families they work with.

About the Author
One of Time magazine’s “icons of the century,” Ernesto Che Guevara was born in Argentina in 1928. After graduating from medical school, he traveled throughout Latin America. After meeting Fidel Castro in Mexico, he joined the revolutionary forces that overthrew the Batista dictatorship in Cuba in 1959. He became a central leader of the Cuban revolutionary government and later led guerrilla missions to Africa and Bolivia, where he was assassinated in 1967on the orders of the CIA. His life has been dramatized in two recent popular movies: “The Motorcycle Diaries” (directed by Walter Salles, starring Gael Garc�a Bernal) and Steven Soderbergh’s epic “Che” (starring Benicio Del Toro).

Ernesto Guevara is the younger son of Ernesto Che Guevara and Aleida March. He lives in Havana and works as a lawyer.

Those who want true insight into the man

For those of us who are inspired by him, 'Latin America Diaries' gives wonderful insight into the man himself. Whether alone or as a companion book for the Motorcycle Diaries and/or his other personal writings.
Ernesto Guevara books should be read regardless of who he became. Read them as you would any other great author. He had the ability bring to life sights, sounds, emotions; elicit feelings of romance, laughter, even tears. I am an avid reader of very diverse genre's (just about everything but romance novels). It is not often I find an author with the talent to make me forget I am reading a book; much less grabs me into 'living' the story. I am thrilled to have been able to read and add this to my collection of his works.
Beyond his talent, Che (once again) exposes the man he really was. His humor, passion for life, and love of people.
Che Guevara has either inspired or been hated by millions of people around the world.
Too, many people use his photo and quotes yet know nothing about who he really was and that is the true inspiration he gives all of us. He was and is so much more then a revolutionist, communist.
For those who hate the man based solely on his revolutionary actions and political beliefs: it is a 'really should read' book. How can a person be condemned by so many who have never taken the time to learn who he really was as a human being?
What drove him to leave his medical practice, family, money to fight knowing all along how his life would end? Why did he feel so strongly about the rights, equality, and fulfillment of basic needs for every human being?
If nothing else, just pretend its a work of fiction. Then base your opinions on the author vs who he became.

An Excellent Follow Up to “The Motorcycle Diaries"

If you are a huge fan of “The Motorcycle Diaries“ like I am, then this is a must read! A warning though, as Ernesto Che Guevara didn't have the opportunity to edit this diary prior to it's being published, it makes for choppy reading throughout large portions. This is aided significantly by the insertion of letters to his mother throughout and detailed footnotes. Overall, I highly recommend it.

Great information & pictures

Very informative book covering literally everything about Killifish, the book is written in a very useful and detailed way but also in a writing style that is very easy to understand and learn from. I've read a few books related to these kind of fish but none of the others have even came close to the usefulness found in these pages.

One of the main things that I really admire about this book are the mass amount of very colorful and high quality photographs that are incorporated into different chapters of the book, they add a great visual aid to the information and it helped me understand the topics that are discussed in great detail. These fish are fascinating and the book answered all my questions that I had previously about them

Great introductory book on killifish

Although I've raised tropical fish for 40+ years I've never had killifish.. This book is a great introductory text that lays out all aspects of keeping them; buying them online, or raising them from eggs. The illustrations are numerous and well done. One of the best introductory books on any subject I've ever bought. Totally recommend for the beginning killikeeper.

About the Author
Alex Dimitrov is a�recipient of the Stanley Kunitz Prize from The American Poetry Review, author of the�e-chapbook, American Boys,�and the founder of Wilde Boys, a queer poetry salon. He is a Program Coordinator�at the Academy of American Poets, teaches creative writing at Rutgers University, and frequently writes for Poets & Writers magazine. He lives in New York City.

Beautiful and searing.

Ever imagine a knife to the heart feeling tender? Then read Alex Dimitrov's poems for their brutal eloquence. Even the silences are savage in "Begging for It." Dimitrov forces us to admit just how inseparable our troubled minds are from our needy bodies. Lust doesn't happen here without the dry ice of analysis. And ideas themselves take on physicality --hungry, bruised, sweet with pain. A beautiful, searing book. Read it and weep.

A young Sioux woman tossing with fever on a cot; a father begging his wife for help; a mother standing uncertainly in her kitchen with a 12-gauge shotgun: from these fragments of memory, evoked by the narrator as the novel opens, Watson builds a simple but powerful tale. It is Montana in 1948, and young David Hayden's father, Wesley, is sheriff of their small town--a position he inherited from his domineering father. Wesley is overshadowed by his older brother, Frank, a war hero who is now the town doctor. When Marie, the Sioux woman who works for the Haydens, fall ill, she adamantly resists being examined by Frank. Some probing reveals that Frank has been molesting the Indian women in his care. Wesley's dilemma--should he turn in his own brother?--is intensified when Marie is found dead and David confesses that he saw his uncle near the house before she died. The moral issues, and the consequences of following one's conscience, are made painfully evident here. Watson is to be congratulated for the honesty of his writing and the purity of his prose. Highly recommended.

Watson (In a Dark Time, 1980), winner of the 1993 Milkweed National Fiction Prize, offers a lean, gaunt narrative rich with implication about a 12-year-old boy who witnesses the anguish of his sheriff father, who is forced to arrest his own brother for rape. David Hayden, now a history teacher, narrates the events of over 40 years ago, when his father, trained as a lawyer, was in his second term as sheriff of Bentrock, a small community of 2,000 close to the Canadian border. David's grandfather was also once a sheriff in a place where the land is harsh, the wind strong, and the sky endless. Meanwhile, David's Uncle Frank, a war hero, is a doctor, and the plot unfolds when Marie Little Soldier, the Haydens' housekeeper, falls sick. She screams when Uncle Frank treats her--then reveals that Frank has a reputation as a rapist of Indian women. David's father investigates and wrests from Frank a promise that he won't rape any more Indians. But then Marie dies unexpectedly, and David reveals information that leads his father to suspect that Frank had something to do with the death. He arrests Frank, but locks him in his own basement instead of in jail. The rest of Watson's story treats the consequences of that arrest: grandfather Hayden threatens his sheriff son, excusing the war hero uncle's sexual rapacity as normal instinct (``You know Frank's always been partial to red meat''); and Frank, after busting all the jelly and preserve jars in the basement where he's imprisoned, kills himself, whereupon the sheriff packs up his wife and son and moves away. A Really different kind of story....but very thought provoking

I was required to read this book for 9th grade class reading. After and while reading it we analyzed each important thing that happened, and through this I was able to see the brilliance in this small and simple book; the understated themes and moral questions that this little book brought up.

Set in the tiny fictional town of Bentrock Montana, this story follows the life of David, a twelve year old boy, and his family living there. His father, Wesley, is the town's sherif, and his family, the Haydens', has held power in the town for a long time, almost like a clan. His Uncle is a respected war hero and doctor, well liked by everyone; charming, charismatic, and funny. Indians also live there, and one, a young woman named Marie, works for Wesley, his wife Gail, and their son David, who loves her. Everything seems good and simple and nice, with the worst crimes in the town being a couple of drunks occasionally getting into a bar fight.

But then, Marie gets sick. And she tells Gail something that will forever change the family - Frank has molested her and raped countless other Indian women. Wesley is forced to choose between his family and what's right.

This book is short and simply written, but conveys a lot of meaning within it. It's a different book than most - dark but bright, friendly but icy and cold. It plunges you headfirst into an intense storyline.

Stunning story full of shocks and surprises....

In the hands of the very skillful story teller, Larry Watson, this novel shines the light on the justice and morality of a small western town at a time when many people chose to look the other way at certain social injustices.

David Hayden narrates this stunning story as an adult recalling the events as he remembers them when he was twelve years old. His narrative is crisp with all of the openess and clarity characteristic of an observant young man, but seasoned with age,

He tells us at the beginning of the novel......"From the summer of my twelfth year I carry a series of images more vivid and lasting that any others of my boyhood and indelible beyond all attempts the years make to erase or fade them..."

And from there, we enter the town of Bentrock, Montana, where we are slowly and lucidly made aware of the horrific abuse of power taking place and are unable to look away from the unconsciable and abhorrent events that are unfolding.

It was both distressing and compelling to read such a heart-wrenching book that took place in the notorious lawlessness of the fabled 'Wild West'

Perhaps the legendary Old West might have, in reality, been a far more civilized and secure place than the America of today.

Justice in 'them good ole days' was often served up rather quickly and often with a sense of moral integrity.

Larry Watson very discerningly crafts a disturbing, yet touching story, a story that is at once both highly believable and shockingly unbelievable!

America loves it's heroes, it's prodigal sons, the godliness of it's doctors......those men of power that seem to be above reproach. Unfortunately, there are always 'bad apples' in the best of the bunch and we find one here.

In 1948, the Indian woman was not given a fair place in her society and was thus a easy victim for an abuser. Even today, more native Indian are raped than any of the other American ethnic groups. I found the following information on-line to be ghastly and abominable.......

"Colonizers have long tried to crush the spirit of the Indian peoples and blunt their will to resist colonization. One of the most devastating weapons of conquest has been sexual violence. In the eyes of colonizers, Indian bodies are inherently "dirty." White Californians of the 1860s called Native people "the dirtiest lot of human beings on earth." Violence done to "dirty" or "impure" bodies simply does not count"

As Montana 1948 unfolds and the truth becomes evident, justice seeks to prevail.

However, a few unexpected twists and turns at the end add a surprising punch to this very well written family and societal drama.

As Cormac McCarthy's Sheriff Bell in No Country for Old Men opines at the end of his book when a reporter questions him about how crime has gotten so out of hand.

Sheriff Bell responds......"It starts when you begin to overlook bad manners. Any time you quit hearin 'Sir and Mam' the end is pretty much in sight. I told her........you finally get into the sort of breakdown in mercantile ethics that leaves people settin around out in the desert dead in their vehicles and by then it's just too late."

Seems to me that Sheriff Hayden, like Sheriff Bell understood the changes that were taking place all too well with his final fervent remark as he slammed his hand down on the dinner table so hard that the plates and silverware jumped:

"Don't blame Montana." he thundered. " Don't ever blame Montana!"

Great read!

I'm not much for reviews, but I really enjoyed this book and had trouble putting it down. Watson does such a great job describing the characters and making you feel like you're an invisible observer as events unfold. It's almost like you already know the characters.

I remember several times in the story I would read a sentence or two and those would be followed by another "extra sentence" almost that seemed so perfectly placed. This "extra sentence" conveyed so much emotion and went a step further than I believe most authors would have gone. It's as if Watson adds this extra sentence and you think to yourself after reading it, "you know, I would feel the same way if I was in this situation," but you would've never thought of it on your own if he hadn't taken the time and effort to craft such a thought. Watson makes the effort to capture every moment and ensures the reader can grasp the emotion.

I felt really connected to this book and maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much. However, I think anyone can appreciate a story written with such characterization and emotion. Watson doesn't waste time fluffing it up to make it some overdone masterpiece of American literature. Sometimes less is more and that's what makes this book so outstanding!
