Hybrid systems describe the interaction of software, modeled by finite-state systems such as finite-state machines, with the physical world, described by infinite-state systems such as differential equations. Verification and Control of Hybrid Systems provides a unique systematic exposition of several classes of hybrid systems, admitting symbolic models along with the relationships between them. The text outlines several key verification and control synthesis results for hybrid systems, guided by the concept of bisimulation, and illustrated by numerous examples.

The book is divided into four parts:

Part I presents basic concepts centered on a notion of system that is general enough to describe finite-state, infinite-state, and hybrid systems.

Part II discusses the ways in which systems relate to other systems, such as behavioral inclusion/equivalence and simulation/bisimulation, using these relationships to study verification and control synthesis problems for finite-state systems.

Part III draws inspiration from timed automata to present several classes of hybrid systems, with richer continuous dynamics, that can be related to finite-state symbolic systems. Once such relationships are established, verification and control synthesis problems for these hybrid systems can be immediately solved by resorting to the techniques described in Part II for finite-state systems.

Part IV follows the same strategy by generalizing simulation/bisimulation relationships to approximate simulation/bisimulation relationships that can be used for a wider class of hybrid systems.

Was very useful

I'm a PhD student in the area of control theory, I was so curious about simulation, and bisimulation relations and how they apply to verification and control of hybrid systems. It gave me a very good understanding of these notions together with information on where the literature is in the computer science part of hybrid systems. I actually did not buy it, I lent it from the library. I don't think it is available online for everyone, it is available only for those universities which have bought springer publications.

I just came here to appreciate the endeavour Paulo Tabuada has put on this book to make it as clear as possible to all readers, even those who are not very familiar with the background and notions in the field like me.

I'm sad that I didn't notice that the entire book is available on-line for free (from the publisher even). I'd like to support the author, but I'm not sure I want to spend $80 on this book when I don't have to.

Quiet, simmering book about the drama of the everyday

At Hawthorn Time was one of several Baileys Prize longlisted titles I gifted myself earlier in the year. I picked a few of the more interesting books and made liberal use of my Buy It Now finger, a habit I practice less often now that I'm single and down to one income. It's a necessary economy, still, I allow myself the luxury every now and then. Because there's nothing better than getting a big box of books in the mail to lift the spirits.

In the course of the past few weeks, I've been in book culling mode. As I'm culling, I'm becoming more aware of exactly what's on my shelves. Last week I came across my Baileys stash and grabbed Harrison's novel at random, finishing it in the course of three or four days. It's a quiet book, one that simmers slowly. It's about the drama of the everyday. Nothing big happens, nothing splashy or headline-making, but to the characters the events are life-changing.

I enjoy novels with converging storylines, featuring characters unrelated but inhabiting the same geographical space. It allows deep exploration of a sense of place through the eyes of a cross-section of characters coming from very different perspectives.

At Hawthorn Time tells the stories of four main characters living in the area surrounding Lodeshill, a smallish English village:

Howard and Kitty, married 30 years and new to the village since their retirement, have grown steadily apart, unhappy but lacking the energy to do anything about it. When Kitty learns she may be ill, she's forced into deciding what she'll tell her husband, if anything. And when their children come to visit, this couple that's slept apart must make room for guests sleeping in their home.

Jack, a rebellious modern-day hippie who skipped imprisonment after his conviction for trespassing, is walking across country on his way back to the village, hoping he's not recognized and taken into custody while working migrant jobs for the money to keep body and soul together. Spending every day looking over his shoulder, when he is eventually discovered he's forced to decide where he'll go from there.

And Jamie, a 19-year old man with no prospects or direction in life, limps along in a low-paying, unfulfilling job while also helping his parents deal with the growing dementia of his grandfather. As the one person closest to his grandfather, when the old man goes missing it falls on Jamie to unravel the mystery of what happened to him and where, and if, he can be found.

Before it all ends, the lives in the story do cross, with disastrous consequences.

This book should be read for its beautiful language, gentle and meandering contemplation of relationships and ever-deepening examination of the inner lives of the characters. It can't be read in a spirit of impatience, or it will not hold interest.

There is crisis and catharsis, movement and change. These are the sorts of crises you see from a distance, in friends and acquaintances with whom you don't share all life's problems. You think to yourself there must be more behind a surface that seems so tranquil, but aren't always privy to their secrets.

At Hawthorn Time goes inside the lives we keep hidden. A lovely, lovely novel.

Where was the plot? Was there a plot?

This is a beautifully written, slow paced book about a small village in rural England. There are four main characters. Howard and Kitty moved to the countryside a year ago after their children left home. Their marriage had been strained for years and the challenges of adapting to a new place have further divided them. Jamie is only 19 and grew up in the area but he is also struggling to find his feet and thinks often about a childhood friend who moved away. Finally there is Jack, a drifter, who comes to the area in search of seasonal farming work.

Not a lot happens in this book. It opens and ends with a car accident in which a character will die, but this is easily the most dramatic event. There is a lot of descriptive writing about the countryside. It feels like a very carefully written book. There are sentences that you want to savour and there are a couple of descriptions of Howard and Kitty's marriage towards the end that rang achingly, beautifully true. And yet it is also frustratingly slow. Things happen, you think "hooray, there's going to be a plot after all", but then they fizzle out again. Even the ending is frustratingly ambiguous. I admired this book, I found the characters interesting, it got under my skin - but it also irritated me.

Setting out walking early one spring morning

This starts with a prologue. So you know where the story ends but not the who. This is a clever, although post modernist novel. Its initial protagonist Jack is on a walk to reconnect with the English countryside. He is what used to be called a tramp but in contemporary English society he is an itinerant, seen as a bigger, a gypsy-the other. He on the other hand is grieving the subtle shifts permeating the English countryside, rural life and its people. Spring emerges with renewal of plants and animals as the story unfolds around one village. The rural working class family, the retiree escapees from London and their disintegrating marriage and Jack. It is a powerful novel and on the whole paints a picture of a contemporary English country setting. However, it is no "Last of the Summer Wine". It is not sentimental (more matter of fact and at times stark as nature can be). But it is also compassionate in what it shares. My one criticism was the ending (following the prologue beginning) does not work as is often the case in post modernism, the ending is unsatisfying.

Finding The Lost Egyptian Queen

This book is a first rate Science Fantasy! It is filled with fantastic, exotic adventure, a lost race, a forgotten underwater city, a sense of wonder. It was published in Weird Tales 1938. It was a four part serial, well illustrated. I'm surprised it was never reprinted in Famous Fantastic Mysteries. It reminds me of A. Merritt's work, Francis Stevens The Citadel of Fear, E. Charles Vivian The Ninth Life and Haggard's she.

Thomas P. Kelley (1905-1982) wrote three other fantasy novels: The Face That Launched a Thousand Ships, Tapestry Triangle and The Gorilla's Daughter. He was quite prolific, writing mostly adventure fiction and True Crime.

Just the Facts, Ma'am

I have mixed feelings about this book. It is undoubtedly interesting and well researched and explores, sometimes in horrifying detail, the lengthy torture and eventual death of 16 year old Sylvia Likens in 1965. However, as other reviews of this manuscript have commented, there is little psychological exploration of the motives of 37 year old Gertrude Banisweski to orchestrate and encourage the kind physical pain both she and her children inflicted upon Sylvia in the short months that Sylvia was a boarder at the Baniszewski home. Then again, I am not certain there could be or that certain forms of sociopathic behavior really need explaining.

During the time that Sylvia Likens and her sister, Jenny, lived with Gertrude Baniszewski, both were subjected to repeated verbal, emotional, and physical abuse. Soon, however, Gertrude focussed her rage upon Sylvia. What is most horrifying is that this wicked woman encouraged and incited additional violence using her own children and other children from the neighborhood as pawns in her vicious game. I must say, it is REALLY unclear as to why Gertrude did focus so much hatred and rage upon a child she hardly knew. The theory cited by the prosecuting attorneys is that Gertrude was jealous of Sylvia's beauty and the promise her life held. Perhaps this is true, but if one is hoping for a clear motive that meets the criteria for basic understanding (i.e. money, love, or revenge), there simply is not one.

While the court did find it necessary to evaluate Gertrude and her 17 year old daughter for legal sanity, Gertrude was never fully psychologically evaluated. Her 17 year old daughter, Paula, was. The psychologist noted that Paula's mental functioning, emotional immaturity, and violent behavior were consistent with that of children reared in homes where "emotional neglect" is the norm. It is known that Gertrude, as a single mother, could not afford to feed her 7 children. The children regularly fought over food and Sylvia was once severely beaten for eating a sandwich given to her by her oldest sister during a visit. It is also known that Gertrude was heavily addicted to prescription pain medication and regularly spent her days in bed. The children had little superivision and Paula was expected to perform many of the duties that Gertrude avoided.

When Gertrude turned her deadly rage upon Sylvia, I do not find it difficult to believe that several of her children also found Sylvia a convenient target for their own unexpressed rage born of a childhood rife with abuse and neglect. The most basic needs of the Baniszewski children were never met with any consistency and they, in turn, were angry and hurt. These feelings were unleashed upon the only person available to them to hurt in return. Still, it is shocking that children as young as 10 could gleefully watch and participate in the kind of extended torture to which young Sylvia was subjected.

There is some powerful evidence that Gertrude was also having a sexual relationship with a neighborhood boy, 14 year old Richard Hobbs. Though neither admitted they were sexually involved, Richard did state that he was a "good friend" of Gertrude's and regularly visited her home after school. He also told police investigators that Gertrude had once "danced" for him in the living room of her home. (To see photographs of Gertrude, who appeared at least 10 years older than her chronological age of 37, this image is both laughable and repulsive.) If Gertrude manipulated or exercised any psychological power over Richard, it was manifisted in his unflinching willingness to carve into the flesh of Sylvia's stomach, at Gertrude's direction, the words "I am a prostitute and proud of it." (There is horrifying photograph of Sylvia Likens battered body in which these words are clearly visible.)

In short, Gertrude and 3 of her children, along with Richard Hobbs and another neighborhood boy, were all conivicted of murder. Eventually paroled, Getrude changed her name and lived in solitude until her death in 1990 from lung cancer, the result of years of habitual chain-smoking. The parole of Gertrude leaves one cold and feeling as though justice was not served. Richard Hobbs, however, was not so fortunate. At trail, Richard admitted to the jury during questioning that he had "no feeling" at the time he carved words into Sylvia's flesh with a hot wire. While Richard attempted to later soften the blow of this admission by stating that he now felt remorse for his actions, I find this difficult to believe. He died at the age of 21 in prison from cancer. (I suppose Richard got what was coming to him from a higher court. Sometimes justice is swift and harsh.)

There was considerable discussion among the public about why Sylvia and her sister never ran away from the Baniszewski home. Effectively abandoned by their own parents who were, by all accounts, poverty stricken and shiftless, where exactly were the girls supposed to run? While their parents worked for a travelng carnival, the girls were left in the care of a woman their father hardly knew and never felt it necessary to know better. There was nowhere to go and no one to run to.

In short, I do recomend HOUSE OF EVIL to those who appreciate True Crime. But there are many questions that will never be answered.

Same story with minor amendments

I once owned the reprint of this book, but was so disturbed by what I read that I very scarcely read it and eventually gave it to someone who needed it for research this past spring. Last month I decided to give it another chance and bought this new paperback version. For those who have not heard this story, let me tell you something: This tale of the sadistic side of human nature is just as horrific the second or third or tenth time around as it is the first. To this day, my head spins and my stomach churns as I think of the unspeakable horror that sixteen-year-old Sylvia Likens endured at the hands of her monsterous caretaker, her equally heartless children, and their demented friends. This is a story that in four years time has NEVER left my memory and probably never will. If you do decide to read about this, prepare to be shocked as this story is told with a terrifying realism that should only exist in our nightmares.

As for the differences between this publication and the original, this book is in fact the same book, except that: 1. This book is a traditional paperback book as opposed to the copy with the original red vellum cover (hence, the steep price tag for the latter); 2. There is an added foreword as well as an updated afterword; and 3. The photos have been moved to the very middle of the book as opposed to the random placement in the original, including two or three never-before-seen pictures. There are also some very minor amendments such as the name of the song that Sylvia sang at night and the change in spelling of her older sister's name ('Dianna' as opposed to 'Diana'). Since this is more or less the same publication, and neither better nor worse than the first copy, I'll give it the same rating as I did originally: 4 stars.

Horrifying story

This book is based on the true story about a young teenage girl put into the care of a supposedly responsible woman. Unfortunately, the woman turned out to be seriously disturbed and took her anger and frustration out on the girl. What was even sadder was that she encouraged her own children and their friends to torment and torture the girl. It was a heartbreaking story which should have been avoided as neighbors were aware that something was wrong in the home and any of the children involved (some of whom did not participate in tormenting the girl) could have contacted the police, told a teacher or even discussed it with a minister who one the family. Slightly wooden writing and the reasons for the behavior of those involved was not gone into very deeply, although this could have been due to an inability to spend time with the people described or not getting any cooperation. Still, a serious commentary on how seemingly small failures by those around the girl ended up in being instrumental in her death.
