Recounting his travels from 1845 to 1847, he tells us of Galveston, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio, as well as the German hamlets at New Braunfels and Fredericksburg. He ventures to the abandoned Spanish mission and presidio on the San Saba, meets Lipans and Comanches, rides wide prairies, witnesses midnight prairie fires, dodges a stampeding buffalo herd, learns about skunks the hard way, and survives sequential bouts of yellow fever, malaria, and dysentery. And that’s just a glimpse of his story. Roemer's book is one of a handful of great eyewitness accounts of the new State of Texas. He was there when Austin’s capitol was "a log building on top of a hill," when the previous capital at Washington was a shambles, when San Antonio was still licking its revolutionary wounds, when wagons and steamboats were in short supply, having been commandeered by the U.S. military for the war on Mexico. He passes up a chance to visit "a little place called Dallas on the Trinity River" in favor of venturing to a Caddo Indian village. Roemer was an educated and articulate man, and his prose is a cut above most frontier memoirs, making his writings particularly readable and informative.

Roemer's Texas

I was hoping for a book that would give me insight into what my Alsatian ancestors dealt with when they left the motherland and settled in Texas--the climate, the daily requirements of living, the Natives, and the attitudes. This is a book I will read twice. Roemer's first person narrative is an erudite memoir of his two-year travel through a state that had just been admitted into the Union. Based on a 1935 translation by Oswald Mueller, the sentences tend to be long and complex, but are rich in information. His intention to enlighten his fellow countrymen about Texas then, and even now, is well served. I found his powers of observation matched by his ability to write about them. One should read this book with a big map of Texas in hand to fully appreciate the ground he managed to cover. His geology and botany paints a picture of a country he considered a difficult but beautiful and promising land for settlers. It was not at all dry. He manages to come across as both honest and respectful in relating his experiences with those he meets on his sojourn.
