Good short read!

A well written short story. I only noticed one error and that didn't really affect the flow of the story so I am not going to mark it down for that. The only reason I took off a star is because the ending seemed too rushed - would have liked a little more drama involved.
If you are looking for a quick clean read then you will probably enjoy this. If you want to know what it is about then you will have to read it for yourself (it won't take you that long) because I don't believe in retelling the storyline in my reviews.

The is a wonderful short HEA you can read in a wait at the doctors office. It's a story of the young love of Sydney & Mitch that had a continuous summer romance until Sydney left Mitch at the alter. Now years later they meet again. Wow, do they meet again. The tension & hormones are high but so worth the read to find out. I got to read it for free so that was even better.

this was a good story about second chances. It was a little rushed at times (which I feel is the downfall with many short stories), but it was still a strong story. You understood the characters as they are and feel the connection. A good lunch hour read.

The morning after Cagen, founding editor of the independent magazine To-Do List, attended a "New Year's Eve Party Totally Devoid of [the] Midnight Kiss," she had what she calls a "spontaneous exclamation." She and her friends were "quirkyalones." The word came to her fully formed, and in this zany, untraditional book, she explains the word and the movement it spawned. A book, a word, and a journey

By the time I discovered this book, it had already begun to dawn on me that perhaps I didn't NEED to be in a relationship to be happy, that just maybe what others call "too picky" is really exquisite self-awareness, and that life could be exciting, joyful, and filled with unending possibility once I learned to stop twisting myself into the shape society says we should take and be the real Me instead.

Sasha Cagen gave my journey a name: Quirkyalone.

While I may quibble with a few of the particulars she lays out, the bigger picture she has tapped into is clearly something deep and very important and deserving of attention. I hope that people aren't put off by the "alone" part of the title, because it is not at all about loneliness or isolation. Rather, it's about being courageously and unapologetically true to oneself and living life on one's own terms.

For those of us who feel we've already arrived, this book is comforting validation. For those who seek greater independence and fulfillment in their lives, it just may help lead the way.

Best read of the new millenium!!!!!!!!

This book articulated what I have felt and believed my whole life: love is important, but it is not always romatically focused. And when it is, it should never be a sellout or settling. This book is for anyone who has never aspired to the status quo of coupledom, but would welcome it when they met the right person. Insightful, playful, cutting edge, inspiring, fun & grounded at different turns... It revolutionized my world bc it gave me a label and a group to identify with. THANK YOU SASHA!!!

Freakin' awesome. Groundbreaking book.

"I have devoured self-help books, 'attract love into your life' books, and even embraced the dogma of He's Just Not That Into You, and It's Just a Effing Date. These are sassy books aimed solely at women which try to sell the idea that if the guy wants you, they'll chase you. If they don't, they're just not that into you. I blindly accepted this advice, not calling guys who gave me their numbers, not responding to their messages right away, not initiating conversation, and waiting the proper amount of days/ weeks for this so called 'chase' to begin, and generally suppressing my instincts, all so that I would be seen as 'dateable.' click here to reverse this brainwashing Reality hit when these guys left me in the dust.

Enter Quirkyalone

I heard about a book called 'Quirkyalone' that sparked an entire movement of people who were embracing being single and celebrating it, exploring it as just another human condition that didn't have to be 'fixed.' I was fascinated. Were there singles in the world who were just cool with being single, accepting of themselves and their quirks? I bought the book, opened to the first page, and this is what I saw:

quirkyalone- a person who enjoys being single (but is not opposed to being in a relationship) and generally prefers to be alone rather than date for the sake of being in a couple. With unique traits and an optimistic spirit; a sensibility that transcends relationship status. See also; romantic, idealist, independent."

The book listed examples of quirkyalones throughout history- Queen Elizabeth I, Thoreau, Rosa Parks, and Rumi just to name a few. Inspirational quotes, letters, and funny illustrations were woven throughout the pages and everything quirky was covered, from international quirkyalone day (Feb. 14) to the concept of 'quirkytogether' and the 'quirkyslut'. I highlighted this sentence next:
"When you are single long enough to know singleness is a unique state of being and not just a holding pattern between relationships, you are on the brink of becoming quirkyalone."

This reminded me of my 20s when I would voluntarily take an entire year off in-between boyfriends to explore creative pursuits, while my friends seemed to go from guy to guy. While they were getting married I was driving across the country alone to work on a ranch in Arizona. I longed for what they had, but I also wanted to stay true to myself. Sometimes that led me to alienation, other times liberation.

Cagen's diffrentiation between loneliness and solitude really spoke to me:
Loneliness: When you want the phone to ring, and it doesn't.
Solitude: Walking alone, when a 'little bomb of revelation' comes.

Quirkyalone's message got me at my core. It said you can transcend loneliness and arrive at solitude. And you can come out of that single-shame place. And guess what else? You can be happy. There is no judgement, no self-improvement plan, no strategy to make you 'dateable,' only compassion for a human condition that over half of the U.S. population happen to be in right now. stats on this The entire single population could benefit immensely from the ideas in this book- imagine, a world where vulnerabilities, quirks, and weirdness don't have to be kept in check, or uncomfortably 'exposed,' but welcomed and maybe even celebrated!
Discovering Quirkyalone was great, and then came along It's Not You: 27 (Wrong) Reasons You're Single by Sarah Eckel. Reading these two books back to back was like getting blasted with two awesome rock songs while cruising down the highway on a sunny 70 degree day. Get ready for some freewheeling emancipation!

This book fills a crucial gap

So you know how to use your database software, but do you know how to design a good database?

I got lucky when I found this book. I'd been building a database myself after taking a class on MS Access at my local community college. MS Access is so easy to use that I was comfortable and confident. I'd built many related tables and built several queries, forms and reports. No problems. Everything was working fine.

But with each element I added, I got less confident about the DESIGN of my ever-growing database. It was working fine, but were the tables and relationships optimal? As it grew more complex, was I going to make a mistake? Or find a fundamental flaw in my early assumptions? Classes and tutorials on database programs cover design concepts so briefly because they need to cover a lot of details about how to use the program. This book does the exact opposite. It glosses over how to use your software and focuses on design concepts. In the preface, the author says:

"This book does not assume that any particular DBMS [database management system] product will be used [... so ...] all of the concepts are presented in a DBMS-agnostic manner. When learned this way, students come to understand that the fundamentals pertain to any database [...]"

This is why it's shorter than some reviewers seem to think it should be. It isn't "too short." It's "focused." There are plenty of other books that cover the other stuff. This book is clear, concise and accessible. I'm glad it didn't go into more technical details.

It focuses on database fundamentals, design and administration by explaining what each of the following concepts mean and why they're so important: the relational model, normalization, functional dependencies, data modeling, entity-relation model, client-server model, DBA, concurrency control, security, backup and recovery, and even a bit about SQL (the computer language behind your DBMS). You can skip the SQL chapter if you want. I did.

Final word: This book is a quick read and easy to understand. It is a bit pricey, but if it fills a crucial gap in your knowledge, like it did for me, it's well worth the price.

Great introductory book, horrible price

This is by far the best introductory database book I have ever read or used.

Pro

It is written in very clear English.

It covers the basics of database design very well.

It is not overly technical.

One of the best treatments of normalization I have ever seen.

The exercises at the end of each chapter are well thought out.

Con

The book cost way too much ($60) for an introductory textbook.

The use of the term "theme" was changed to "topic" in the 2nd edition. The editing was faulty and the book only defines topic but used both theme and topic. Not a big deal if you used the first edition and know they mean the same thing but it is confusing to students when the book uses the terms interchangably without defining theme.

This is not a reference for database programmers. If you already understand ERD's and normalization don't buy this book it is meant to be an introduction to database basics not a shelf reference.

I like that the does not cover a lot of history. If you want to know a lot about Codd and the evolution of the different normal forms this is not the book for you. If you want a good introduction to databases for a non-technical class this is the best book you will find in my opinion.

Disorganized and Inconvenient

The book has useful information in it, but, as a learning and reference tool, it is very poorly structured. If you know absolutely nothing about databases and plan on completing all the end of chapter exercises from chapter 1 until the very last chapter, then this book is worth 3 stars (average at best). So if you need to learn a specific topic from a specific chapter, you are required to have completed nearly every chapter exercise prior to the lesson of interest. (In case you are wondering, no there aren't online resources which allow you download the needed exercise files).

As I use this book, I consistently find myself being frustrated with how much time I am wasting in order to just begin my homework assignments. Until an edition of this textbook develops a modular, standalone chapter structure, avoid it.

How do you move a business from being merely good to being the best? What path should a business take to strive for and actually achieve excellence in performance? The author asserts that this is best done by using a structured, disciplined integrated management process to run the business. This process is called Integrated Business Planning.

As the title declares, George Palmatier describes "The Transition from Sales and Operations Planning to Integrated Business Planning" in this well-written little book. Palmatier is recognized to be the foremost authority of the Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process. He has written a number of excellent books on the subject, including "Enterprise Sales and Operations Planning." Now in this his latest book he guides the practitioner and the business leader in how to move from the fundamental demand, supply, and inventory balancing of S&OP to more fully utilize the S&OP process to strategically manage the business. Indeed, the reader might think of this book as instruction on how to “supercharge” S&OP, although it is much more than that.

The basic principle of the book is that the excellent companies are making far greater gains in their business results by evolving S&OP into the industry best practice for strategic management. By implementing Integrated Business Planning (IBP), companies now have the means to assure their strategic and business objectives are met.

Indeed, companies that are making huge gains in both their top-lines and bottom-lines have not solely focused their Sales and Operations Planning process on balancing demand, supply, and inventory. They are using S&OP as a strategic management weapon as well. As the author illustrates, it is a natural extension of S&OP to validate whether the latest projections and plans are aligned and synchronized with the company’s strategies. If they are not, one or the other requires adjustment.

The book is an easy, fun read. It is written as a novel. The principles of Integrated Business Planning are imbedded in a story telling how a fictional multi-divisional global company initiates a project to transition from an existing Sales and Operations Planning process to that of Integrated Business Planning.

The story flows from the initiation of the project to transition to IBP, to the formation of a core steering team, to the development of the principles and tactics to be used in establishing the IBP process, and finally to planning for the implementation of IBP division by division throughout the company. Along the way Palmatier provides valuable insight and explanation as to the differences between traditional S&OP and Integrated Business Planning. He also testifies to the power of IBP to improve integration and focus of the business’s resources and functions, provide more forward visibility and transparency, and facilitate more strategic thinking.

The story demonstrates how a core steering team consisting of multi-functional teammates copes with the difficulties and questions of developing and implementing the Integrated Business Planning process in their business and collaboratively come to a consensus in their approach. The story also demonstrates the value of using a consultant, an outside coach, to bring knowledge of best practices to the team and guide the development and training so as to jumpstart the process development and shorten the time to results.

Palmatier points out that the IBP process should first, and foremost, be built on a solid, well-functioning Sales and Operations Planning process that the leadership team and management team have firmly established. It is imperative that an installed S&OP process regularly and routinely balance demand, supply, and inventory in the enterprise on a disciplined, regular, and routine basis each month. Without this alignment, the leadership team’s time is spent dealing with chaos and problems, rather than the opportunities for the business.

While the book assumes the reader has at least a basic knowledge of Sales and Operations Planning, a high-level description of the fundamental S&OP process is included. The standard reviews within the S&OP process are enumerated as (1) Product and Portfolio, (2) Demand, (3) Supply, and (4) Financial Appraisal as precursors to an (5) Integrated Reconciliation Review. The S&OP process culminates in the (6) Management Business Review. The author explains how each of these six fundamental reviews are elevated and enhanced in carrying out the Integrated Business Planning process.

Some of the primary themes and insights Palmatier espouses for transitioning from Sales and Operations Planning to Integrated Business Planning are as follows: First of all, IBP is strategy oriented whereas traditional S&OP is primarily focused on demand and supply balancing. The IBP process is an aggregate planning process aimed at integrating Strategic Management into the organization. The six fundamental reviews of S&OP enumerated above are the same as those of IBP. The difference is strategy is intentionally incorporated into each of the review steps in the case of IBP. In fact, strategy is explicitly made an agenda item in each review every month, as appropriate. There is a greater emphasis placed on such monthly reviews as Product Portfolio Management and Integrated Reconciliation. As a company moves from S&OP to IBP, the underlying thought process moves from being execution oriented to strategy oriented. The time in discussion moves more from near-term product and project management to longer-term product portfolio and market strategy.

Integrated Business Planning facilitates the leadership and management team in executing the business’s strategies and in following up by tracking the effectiveness of the strategies themselves. IBP enables the management team to focus on closing the gap between current reality and the business’s strategic goals and objectives. Visibility is given to any such gaps early on so that they can be identified and quickly acted upon.

Secondly, a properly implemented Integrated Business Planning process is fully connected to the execution processes of the enterprise. More specifically, the plan emanating from IBP must be connected to the next downstream level of execution, namely the Master Supply Planning and Scheduling System. The Master Supply Planning and Scheduling System, in turn, drives materials requirements planning, capacity planning, logistics planning, manufacturing scheduling, and other detailed planning and control systems of the business so as to execute the monthly IBP plan.

Thirdly, if done right, IBP is used to manage the very essence of the entire enterprise, from a business perspective, not just a supply chain perspective. It is truly an integrated process where the latest picture of the entire business is made visible to the leadership and management team from a single, structured process. IBP integrates all operating and support functions into a single action plan. The disciplined monthly reviews of IBP provide a regular and routine forum to address resource and investment issues and priorities of not only the operations and sales functions, but of all of the business support functions (human resources/infrastructure/administration) as well. Some companies, depending on their size, complexity, and organization, may wish to add additional reviews to the process structure. Issues are surfaced and addressed in the appropriate functional reviews each month. Issues requiring cross-functional discussions, leadership guidance, or leadership decisions are addressed in the Integrated Reconciliation Review of IBP and, in some cases as necessary, are elevated to the Management Business Review.

Finally, the case is made for deploying the copyrighted Fast Track Proven Path implementation model for improving the current S&OP process and evolving and maturing it into Integrated Business Planning. This implementation model is fully explained in the book. The Fast Track Proven Path implementation methodology is designed to deliver results more quickly than any other known approach when the process being implemented is IBP. Time to results is key to a successful, sustainable implementation.

Nice book but do not but the kindle version - the pictures are not readable. The writing on the pictures is with too small characters and the resolution is too pure to read even when trying to zoom in. Buy the paper back version instead - sorry they do not make the quality proper

Charles W. L. Hill is the Hughes M. Blake Professor of Business at the University of Washington Business School in Seattle. His research interests focus on competition and competitive analysis, corporate strategy, international business, organizational structure, and corporate governance. Dr. Hill has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals and has served on the editorial boards of several top tier journals, including the Academy of Management Review and the Strategic Management Journal. He also is the author of a successful international business textbook. An active consultant, Dr. Hill has worked with numerous companies. He has worked with Microsoft for almost 20 years and continues to be active within that organization. He received his PhD from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

Gareth R. Jones received his PhD from the University Of Lancaster, England, and he is trained in Economics and Organizational Theory and Behavior. Outstanding treatment of the subject

There is no question that for a graduate course in business strategy, either in an MBA or a PhD program, that this book serves as an excellent textbook, covering all aspects of businees strategy in a global economy. All strategies are covered, along with each advantage and disadvantage. Strategies for expansion and survival into foreign markets, as well as locally are fully covered. Of course, the requirements for competetive advantage and how to get there is given thorough treatment.

For the person in business who wants to review or read about business strategies, this book is also an excellent reference tool.

The case studies throuout the book are very illustrative of the points being made.

One thing to be aware of is that the publisher's website does not always deliver to the student all that is promised. If a new edition is published even within weeks of an older edition, then the student who purchased the older edition finds him or herself wihtout much of the promised information available. This happened to me. The ninth edition was published right before my semester started, and the school had already purchased the 8th edition. I contacted the publisher over this, and basically I was S.O.L.

I shall use the text as a reference for years to come.

Poorly Written

First of all, there are two different editions of the book that have the same exact covers and titles and authors, but are completely different. I accidentally bought the wrong one and didn't figure it out until I couldn't find what the instructor was talking about on page 220. When I did obtain the correct version with many case studies in the back appendixes, there were lots of typos and grammatical errors that made some of the examples confusing. The only reason I'm giving the book 2 starts instead of 1 is that the examples were pretty interesting.

This book is easy to read and interesting for a textbook. This paperback edition, however, does not include the case studies. If you need the case studies for class get the hardcover edition.

Boye Lafayette De Mente has been involved with Japan, China, and Korea since the late 1940s as a member of a U.S. intelligence agency, student, trade journalist, editor, and author working out of Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Singapore. He is a graduate of Jochi University in Tokyo and The American Institute for Foreign Trade (now Thunderbird: The School of Global Management). Would Rather Have Borrowed The Book From A Library

There are a number of reasons why I didn't enjoy reading this book. First, many many many Korean words are spelled incorrectly, and it really does detract from the credibility of the author as an authority in this area. At least get the spellings right. Supposedly, going by the book's acknowledgments section, a number of people have had a chance to review the book for editing, yet, many of the most simple words are spelled in shall we say an unorthodox way. Second, the topics could have been covered in a systematic way. Talk about all things legal in one part, all things family in another part, and so on. There is no rhythm or rhyme to how this book organizes the topics, which is annoying. Third, the book is overly general and therefore some of its statements about the "unique character and personality" of Koreans seem unfounded and, quite frankly, bigoted. It is over 450 pages but due to how the topics are organized, many of the written material is needlessly repetitive. Some interesting history is mentioned, but this book could have been much better on a number of fronts.

Informative but repetetive and with atrocious Korean spelling

I found this book fairly informative, ideally to be read one entry at a time every once in a while perhaps. It is way to repetitive and unstructured overall to be consumed in one go. In order to get an idea about some key Korean cultural concepts this is better than reading many of the convoluted academic works. As someone with a Korean studies background, the wrong spelling of even the simplest Korean words and phrases frustrated and disappointed me a lot. As other reviewers have remarked, this clearly undermines the author's (and contributors') credibility unnecessarily. If you can't write simple Korean can you actually read/speak Korean? And if not, how do you expect to understand Korea - and particularly the Korean Mind?

Interesting info, but many mistakes

The cultural information contained in the book is interesting, but the organization was unproductive and the mistakes in the Korean spellings were distracting.

The book is organized by keywords of Korean culture. The keywords are arranged in alphabetical order according to the romanization of the Korean word. If you are approaching the book as a complete beginner to Korean and/or Korean culture this is unhelpful. It is impossible to know where to look. Although my Kindle version does have a section that assigns each entry into certain categories, it would be much easier if the book was just arranged into those categories to begin with. (I don't know if the print version has that section.)

If you speak some Korean and have a specific keyword you would like to look up... well, you're still in trouble. The author never indicates which romanization system (of many varying systems) he is using (and I feel like it was inconsistant anyway), and many of the words were written incorrectly in Korean letters, so the romanization is similarly problematic. (Of course if you recognize this there are limited possible spellings so you would probably get where you wanted to eventually...)

Ultimately, while I think he does make a lot of interesting observations, as with other reviewers I am left wondering just how much I can trust the content given the blatancy of the mistakes. I also think it reads better as a reference book than as a cohesive narrative. (I also agree with one of the other reviewers that a book on the Korean Mind that doesn't address "jeong" is missing one of the more important cultural keywords... or maybe it was there and I just couldn't find it...)

She has been in contact with the residents of the study site since 1993."

About the Author
Marsha Quinlan is a broadly-experienced medical anthropologist with expertise in cultural notions of disease and healing and medical botany. Quinlan has a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Missouri-Columbia and teaches anthropology at Washington State University. She has conducted research with residents of this Dominican community since 1993.

The Perfect Ethnography for an intro to Anthropology Class

I recently used Dr. Quinlan's book for a 100 level "global diversity" requirement for non-anthropology majors. Not only did the students respond well to the book, but also seemed to enjoy the reading better than classics by Chagnon and Lee. Her research focuses on home remedies and cultural notions of the body in a rural Caribbean village. Dr. Quinlan provides an excellent example of both qualitative and quantitative research at various levels of inquiry. Her writing style is professional, personal, and concise. I found the book particularly useful when discussing topics such as language and communication, gender, subsistence, and, of course, ethnomedicine. The book is also handy as a case-study in globalization. Dr. Quinlan's book illustrates and emphasizes the need to understand the balance and relationship between home remedies, folk medicine, and western bio-medical health care in an ever-shrinking world.

I read this book for an intro to Anthropology class and I loved it. I found it easy to read and understand. Dr. Quinlan's insights in to the culture were really interesting, too. I definitely recommend this for anyone interested in medical anthropology or Dominica.

"Principles of Anatomy and Physiology" is designed to be comprehensive enough to provide the background necessary for those courses not requiring prerequisites and yet is concise so as not to confuse and overwhelm students. The Tate text features realistic illustrations and exceptional photographs that, along with clear, straight-forward writing and an emphasis on clinical material help students develop a solid understanding of anatomy and physiology concepts. Explanations have just the right amount of detail, with usually only one example instead of two or three. Other texts use several complex figures to illustrate many concepts - Tate uses less, but more efficient, art. The result is a shorter, simplified textbook that covers all of the major points found in more lengthy texts, but is easier to read and more economical in price.

About the Author
Dr. Philip Tate earned B.S. degrees in both mathematics and zoology and an M.S. in ecology from San Diego State University. He earned his doctorate in biological education from Idaho State University. Phil has taught anatomy and physiology to all levels of students: nursing and allied health, physical education, and biology majors.

Good, readable text

First off, the online material that accompanies the book is fantastic. You have access to a wealth of resources for each chapter on the book's site. The text itself is very well thought out. It is not overly verbose or technical...the text utilizes illustrations for almost every concept which I appreciate because reading it and seeing it are two different things...

Great book. Excellently organizes the material

Great book. Excellently organizes the material. It explains concepts very well and I would recommend this book for pre-med students. I took Anat and Phys 1 & 2 in a cram summer section and made high A's in both with the most difficult Dr. "dude".
Yeah, I forgot his name because I really was into the course.

I am happy with my purchase. The bookstores at the university charge so much it is unbelievable. My sister recommended Amazon.com to me and I will never buy a book from a university bookstore again. The books were in great condition even though they were used and the price was very affordable. Thank you Amazon.
